  1922 (July 25) Waterlow Archive file copy sheets of fifty of the twelve surcharges values (S.G. 85/98 surcharge type B), printed from new plates, each endorsed "250492 25.7.22 156500" in the margin, each stamp with a punch hole. Printed from new plates and outlet directly into the philatelic market to satisfy collectors demand for examples of the 1921 "Lisbon surcharges", they were never sent to the Nyassa Company and do not exist genuinely used, all used examples being contrived or having bogus cancels. Surcharges on stamps printed from worn original plates, sent as specimens to the U.P.U or used from Nyassa, represent a new discovery. £1,000-1,200

  Waterlow Archive imperforate progressive proof sheets of the nine values comprising three sheets of the 2c, 3c, 5c, 10c and 50c values and two sheets of each of the other values, all with a central punch hole between each pair of stamps. All sheets are initialled and dated in April or May 1924 in the margins, some also endorsed "Standard for Examination" (one sheet of each value), "OK" (4 sheets), "Color Correct" (50c sheet) or "Wording + Lay Correct, 504,500 = 10,090 pulls" (one sheet of each value), these last nine proof sheets all with various flaws ringed on the stamps and some with further marginal endorsements including "Remove Blemishes" (3c and 20c sheets), "Improve Impression" (2c and 50c sheets), or "Work does not appear to be square; let Mr Pickering test plate" (5c sheet). A few sheets with a central fold, six sheets with other faults. An interesting and unique archive lot. (23 sheets). £2,500-3,000

  1926 (June 22) Picture postcard of S. Joao Baptista Fortress at Ibo, posted from Ibo to France franked on the picture side by 1921 perf 14-15 5r and postal tax 15c (S.G. C143) tied by Ibo datestamps, the postal tax used to pay postage. £150-200

  1927 (July 27) Very large (39x15cm) registered front from Porto Amelia to Germany bearing twenty stamps comprising pictorial issue 1/2c - 8c and 15c - 5E with additional 6c, 7 1/2c, 8c, 20c, 40c and 50c, the three 15c Postal Tax stamps and 30c Postal Tax due stamp (S.G. D142), each tied by Porto Amelia datestamp with a registration label applied. A spectacular franking, apparently commercial but probably also franked with a stamp collector in mind using whatever stamps still remained at the Porto Amelia Post Office at the end of the Nyassa Company's contract. A rare use of these postal tax stamps, used to pay part of the postage rate. £200-250

Marked "3/80" and handstamped circular framed "TO PAY" with manuscript "30c", backstamped at Bulawayo, an 8d charge mark applied in the London Inland Section. These stamps were sold in Moscow for a single day, at five million times face value, 80% of which represented surtax for children's welfare. Click to view full image... 1879 (Sep 29) Stampless cover endorsed from "Post Office St. Helena" addressed to "Mr Robert Wilson, c/o Egyptian Post Office, Constantinople" with red manuscript "7 1/2, Official Paid" and a "ST. HELENA" c.d.s, backstamped at London (Oct 21) and the British Post Office Constantinople. The first handstamp for use on official mail was not introduced until about 1887. The Egyptian Post Office in Constantinople closed in June 1881. Two closed tears at upper right, otherwise fine and a rare early official cover to a remarkable destination.   1891-93 Public Notices issued and printed at Freetown, the 1891 (Feb 3) notice issued by the Governor J.S Hay headed "Public Notification, Quarantine", announcing that an epidemic of yellow fever prevails at Bonny which has been declared an infected place; the 1893 (Nov 30) notice on yellow paper, issued by the Colonial Secretary J.J Crocks, announcing that the Quarantine Board has removed restrictions on vessels arriving from Conakry in French Guinea. A few edge faults well away from the printed wording, otherwise fine and attractive notices concerning Quarantine, both headed with the Royal arms; just 140 and 120 copies respectively printed for each notice. Very rare items to have survived. £200-250
