TRISTAN DA CUNHA
(Also See Lot 234)

1106
1881 (Dec 28) Twelve page letter (no cover) written by the Rev. Erwin H. Dodgson from Tristan da Cunha, to "Maggie". The contents include news of sightings of whalers and the arrival of the whaler "Eliza Adams" from St. Helena, which brought mail and exchanged flour and other provisions for beef, potatoes and a sheep; the "New London" failed to arrive and the only certain way of communicating is via St. Helena once a year. Dodgson, the younger brother of Charles Dodgson (Lewis Carroll, author of "Alice in Wonderland"), was appointed S.P.G missionary and school teacher on Tristan in 1881 and served there until 1889; Tristan issued stamps in 1981 to commemorate the Centenary of his arrival. The earliest Tristan letter in the Cole Collection (October 1998, sold for £1,600 + premium) and described by Crabb on page 151 of his book. A rare and interesting early letter from Tristan da Cunha. £1,000-1,200

Believed to be the only recorded item from this brief stopover with a Falklands stamp, just one other cover recorded from the ship at Tristan franked by a G.B stamp. A unique card.
