  Erasure Handstamps. 1811-1911 Entire letters, covers and cards (14) or pieces (2) with erasure handstamps cancelling incorrect charges or datestamps, various types in black or red including 1850 cover franked 1d on the reverse with a "1" charge applied upon redirection, deleted and increased to 2d probably because the stamp was overlooked when redirected; 1868 cover from Gladstone to Disraeli with the charge cancelled and an "Official Paid" c.d.s applied (corner fault); 1907 card with a 1d charge deleted when a stamp was noticed on the picture side, etc. (16). £200-240

Click to view full image... 1630 (Apr 3) Entire letter from Arundell House in London, written by Humfrey Haggett on behalf of the Earl of Arundel, addressed "To my worthy esteemed friend Sir Henry Burton Knt of the Bath at his house at Carshalton". Arundel and Burton were then the two Lords of the Manor of Carshalton; the Earl wanted Sir Henry Burton to consult with Sir Nicholas Carew about a prisoner in whom the Earl Marshall had an interest before he was sent to the Reigate assizes. Also an 1814 Mogg coloured strip map of the post road from London to Mitcham. The earliest known letter either to or from Carshalton, fine and rare. Photo on Page 241. £240-300

Paid", boxed "T.P / Carshalton" (9), 1827 much redirected entire letter from Godstone endorsed "Not Known in Carshalton", four items sent as frees, also an 1838 free entire letter to Carshalton with "T.P / Rate / 2d". An attractive example of the experimental black use of the Maltese Cross in London in 1840. Just four 1d black covers recorded from Carshalton. Photo on Page 241. £140-180

Click to view full image... 1841 (Feb 15) Part letter, the lower flap removed and the other flaps all reduced in size, addressed to Bromley bearing a 1d black, PA plate 10 with four good margins, tied by a black Maltese Cross, black "T.P / Carshalton" alongside and a c.d.s on upper flap. A fine example of this uncommon plate 10 stamp. S.G. £700 as a stamp (£3,000 on cover). Photo on Page 241. £200-250

Paid" (4, one to Croydon by Cross Post with large country sorting office type c.d.s), scarce "Carshalton / 1D - PAID" (only recorded example?), "T.P / Carshalton" with Maltese Cross cancels (2, one number "8" in Cross), straight line handstamps (5), "D97" vertical oval obliterator (5) or duplex (13), 1894 price list of stamps from Howarth, Eversleigh & Co (with 1d blacks at 10d for ten, also advertising Royal Surrey Lavender Water!) sent at 1/2d book post rate to Germany, skeletons (16), single and double ring datestamps, parcel post labels (8), etc. (73). £240-300

  1844 Entire letter to Croydon with a 1d red (3 margins, touched at right) cancelled by the scarce London District Post numeral "30" (only used on local mail sent within the district and cross post letters) with large country office type backstamp, and an 1847 cover from Carshalton to Dover with the 1d red cancelled by the similar type "67" numeral at the London Chief Office. Also single 1d reds with the "30" District Post numeral (3), and covers or cards showing other type "30" obliterators or duplexs used at the Inland Branch (2), Lee or Ashby de la Zouche. Sub-Offices. 1883-1919 covers and cards with 1883 1/2d card cancelled Upper Wallington and Carshalton datestamps; Parcel Post labels with datestamps of The Wrythe (2), Cambridge Rd, Carshalton Rd (franked KEVII 7d, a handstamp applied to alter the office name from "Cambridge Rd" to "Carshalton Rd") or South Beddington (the label altered from "The Beeches" in manuscript); and a c.1913 superb quality real photo postcard of The Wrythe Post Office and stores with the store keeper outside and all signs and products in the window clearly readable.
