Click to view full image... 1903 (Jan 17) Printed North British Railway Co notice of a special meeting prepaid 1/2d in cash from Edinburgh to Kintyre and redirected to Lochgilphead backstamped with the "Chevalier" type GA15 code "A" c.d.s ("K & ARDR" not struck, otherwise superb), also with Greenock and Lochgilphead datestamps. The enclosed proxy form was completed by the recipient with a 1d stamp applied. An unusual use of the rare code "A" c.d.s used on the outward morning sailing, this code A datestamp only recorded used in 1907 by Mackay. Photo on Page 218. £450-550

The only recorded "Chevalier" c.d.s on an illustrated MacBrayne envelope and very rare datestamp with code "A" (not recorded by Mackay with code "A"), closed opening tears at upper edge, otherwise fine, attractive and unique. Click to view full image... 1916 Postcards with KGV 1/2d tied by type GA24 c.d.s with the ships name removed, code "A" dated 9 SP on a card to Lismahagow, and code "B" dated 11 MY (earlier than recorded by Mackay) on a card to Devon, both fine strikes, the second superb. The code "A" c.d.s probably used on the "Columba" and the code "B" c.d.s on the "Iona", the "Columba" having taken over the service from the "Iona" in August 1916. (2). Photo on Page 218. £260-320

Also 1893 Parcel Post labels from Blairmore (May 23) with 1/2d, 1d and 6d pair tied by Greenock parcel cancels, or from Tighnabruaich (Dec 23) with 4 1/2d tied by Greenock parcel cancel, both from parcels which would have been carried by G. & A.   "Fusilier". 1894-1906 Covers, cards and letters comprising 1894 cover franked 2 1/2d posted from Inverness to USA with David MacBrayne logo depicting a steamer on the flap, the enclosed letter on "Steamship Fusilier" notepaper showing a similar steamer design; 1900 cover from Fort William with blue-green and red design showing a steamer and the wording "Glasgow and Highland Royal Mail Steamers" and similar illustrated R.M.S "Fusilier" notepaper enclosed; 1902-06 David MacBrayne postcards written on the "Fusilier" and posted at Fort William, the second with a violet thistle cachet, possibly applied on the steamer, cancelling the stamp; also two postcards showing the ship. The "Fusilier" operated on the Oban-Glencoe-Fort William Service and through the Caledonian Canal to Inverness. (8). £200-250

  Linnet/Conway/Gondolier/Cavalier. 1900-10 Waybill, letters and cards comprising 1900 David MacBrayne waybill with cachet of the steamship "CAVALIER"; 1904 letter on "Steamer Gondolier, Caledonian Canal" notepaper with the David MacBrayne logo depicting a steamer, and two postcards showing the "Gondolier"; 1906 postcard showing the "Conway" on the Crinan Canal but cancelled by "Columba" code "B" c.d.s; David MacBrayne postcard initially written on the "Columba" but completed on the "Linnet" and other cards written on or showing the "Linnet" (4), one posted on the "Columba" with code "B" c.d.s.   Gretna Green Marriages. 1866-85 Covers, letters and ephemera concerning the Lang family who conducted weddings at Gretna Green, including 1866 handwritten and printed marriage certificates both signed by Simon Lang, letters requesting copies of marriage certificates or registers, information about a runaway marriage in the year 1791, letter regarding the rule that marriages are only valid if one party has been resident in Scotland for at least 21 days, a request by a collector for an unused marriage certificate for which he encloses 6d, printed notice "One Pound Reward for the marriage register of Edward Gascoigne supposed to be married between 1670 & 1685 in Lancashire or towns bordering on Lancashire", etc. An interesting collection, all written up on pages.   1901-02 Wrapper and cards bearing QV 1/2d green, comprising postcard to Belgian charged 10c, folded in half and sealed with two Belgian Official Seals (each with Tirlemont Station c.d.s) so that the message could not be read before the postage due charge was paid; 1/2d wrapper uprated 1/2d from Liverpool to Colombo reposted back to G.B with a Ceylon 5c added; and postcard from Folkestone franked 1/2d reposted at Hull four days later with a second 1/2d stamp.   1699 Treasury Warrant for £325.14.00 expended by James Cressett, His Majestys Envoy Extraordinary assisting at the Treaty of Pinneberg, signed by Cressett and James Vernon, Principal Secretary of State. The expenses include £32.12.00 for postage of letters at Amsterdam, Bremen and Hamburg with pensions to the Postmasters, £23.8.00 for postage of letters in the Courts of Lunenberg and for gazettes and printed papers, £14.00.00 for correspondence at Frankfurt and other places of Germany, for receiving & conveying letters, and £37.14.00 for Postmaster of Zell's bill for staff and extraordinary postage during His Majesty's stay in those parts. Exchequer craves allowances for his pains and travelling charges on attending to the several places on the journey following", then listing 54 journeys made with messages or letters, to The Holt, Wandsworth, Kensington, Kingston, Greenwich, Kempton Park, Watford, Shere, Albury, Clapham, etc., signed by Legge. £150-180

  1920-37 Postcards sent by air mail to Europe comprising cards to Germany franked 2 1/2d (4), 3 1/2d, 4d, 4 1/2d or 5d; to Austria franked 2 1/2d, 4 1/2d or 5 1/2d; to Denmark franked 2 1/2d or 4d (Paquebot c.d.s), or franked 2 1/2d to Roumania, Italy or Belgium (2), 3d to Hungary, 4d to France or Switzerland (a very early use of the first Air Mail label on 19 Aug. 1920), 4 1/2d to Sweden or Holland, or sent express delivery to Czechoslovakia franked 8 1/2d. Also a 1923 card franked 3 1/2d to Poland handstamped "NO FLIGHT / SENT BY / ORDINARY SERVICE". Click to view full image... 1928 (July 20) Commercial cover from London to Iquitos, Peru, bearing a blue "BY AIR MAIL" label and endorsed "Servicio Aereo", franked 2 1/2d + 1/- strip of three (perfin "RB&Co" of Rosing Brothers & Co) paying the extra 2/- fee for air mail from New York to Peru and 1/- for internal Peruvian air mail. Backstamped in La Paz on August 21st with Peru 2c, 10c and Air Post 50c applied and cancelled the following day, to pay for air mail from La Paz to Iquitos. A fine cover carried on the first official despatch using S.S "Westfalen" as a floating base in mid Atlantic, from which mail planes were launched by catapult. £100-120

  1934 (June 20) Cover from Liverpool to Buenos Ayres franked 2d + 10d with a blue "VIA ZEPPELIN / FRIEDRICHSHAFEN" label and two strikes of violet "1934 / LUFTSCHIFF GRAF ZEPPELIN / ARGENTINIENFAHRT", datestamps of Friedrichshafen and Buenos Ayres (June 28) on the front, backstamped at Stuttgart and Buenos Ayres. Click to view full image... 1936 (May) Long cover to Buenos Ayres bearing eleven stamps totalling £1.12.00, including 1934 re-engraved Seahorse issue 2/6 (2), 5/- (small corner fault) and 10/- (2), all tied by violet London Air Mail c.d.s, slightly blurred red Lufthansa cachet and arrival backstamp. A few small edge faults but an unusual high franking which includes all three values of the 1934 Seahorse issue. Photo on Page 225. £200-250
