Waterlow file sheets and detailed plating study with many large part reconstructions and some multiples and complete sheets in two large ring binders, together with a folder of detailed notes on this issue and later issues. The superb plating study proving the seven printings, the final two being 1922 reprints from new or refurbished plates, with Waterlow file sheets endorsed with the order number and date and the quantity of stamps issued (40), complete sheets mint (2) or C.T.O (21) and large part reconstructions of all printings for all values. The file sheets have a punch hole through each stamp, and include seven sheets of local surcharges or "PROVISORIO" overprints, and 33 sheets of the 1901 issue comprising 2 1/2r (3), 5r (5), 10r (4), 15r (2), 20r (3), 25r (2), 50r (3), 75r (3), 80r (2), 100r (2), 150r, 200r (2) and 300r, no gum and a few sheets with faults, though a unique and important record of these printings. A remarkable study representing many years work. (1,000s). £3,500-5,000

Local Overprints and Surcharges (S.G. 45-49)
Issued in April 1903 for the new U.P.U rates:- Colonial Postcards 10r to 15r, Foreign Postcards 20r to 25r. Foreign Letters 50r to 65r single, 100r to 130r double, 100r to 115r single registered. A footnote in the S.G. catalogue states "Collectors are warned against dangerous forgeries". To be genuine the surcharge must be on stamps plating to the 1st printing, and with used examples dated only between April and September 1903. Research shows some 90% of these stamps plate to the spurious 3rd, 5th, or 6th printings and the surcharges cannot therefore be genuine.

The flap has a crest of "Northern Division, South African Constabulary", handstamped "Deutsche-Ostafrikanische Gesellschaft / Ibo", endorsed by the sender "There are 10 stamps attached to this envelope". A philatelic but rare franking, just two other cards recorded with the local Provisorio overprint, the local 65r surcharge also very scarce on cover. All stamps with some staining though still an attractive cover. Photo on Page 140. £300-350

Click to view full image... 1903 (Sep 16) Lourenco Marques picture postcard depicting a native musician, sent to Scotland franked on the picture side by 5r and 20r paying the correct 25r postcard rate, each tied by a blue Ibo c.d.s, backstamped at Zanzibar. This card is dated right at the end of the six months April-September period of use of the local 25 "Provisorio" overprint for foreign postcards. This accounts for the 20r + 5r franking, as the local overprinted stamps had run out, and the new 2nd printing with large PROVISORIO overprint was not yet available from London. A fine card. Photo on Page 140. £200-250

On most sheet positions of the 4th printing the giraffes' tails are re-entered and doubled and the colours are paler and quite different from the first printing.

1911 King Manuel II "REPUBLICA" Overprint Issue

On February 3, 1908 King Carlos was shot in Lisbon, and his second son King Manuel came to the throne. Carlos stamps continued in use till 1911 and a new issue was ordered with the portrait King Manuel II. The new stamps had been printed when, on 5 October 1910, the monarchy was overthrown and Portugal became a Republic. The new issue was therefore overprinted REPUBLICA before being sent to Nyassa. The first printing of all values was archived without overprint, but some found their way onto the philatelic market.

Die Proofs of the 2 1/2r - 500r frames, also an additional small portion from the left side of a 400r frame proof, a further 500r frame (piece cut from the upper portion) and an additional Master Proof without value of the 75r - 500r frame design, all in black on white wove paper, taken from a second working copy of the printers master die book, each with the die number written above, endorsed "Cancelled 27/5/31" in red ink. The proofs are all soiled and also show an area of surface scraping to the left or right side. King Carlos I Issues

During, and immediately after WWI, few civilian or Nyassa Company personnel remained; thus few letters are known, and few stamps were needed. In 1918 the small remaining stock of King Carlos I stamps were surcharged locally with new currency values. These were valid for postage in conjunction with the existing King Manuel II old currency stamps overprinted REPUBLICA.
