Also an 1867 certificate for 25 shares in the company, issued to Sir Harry Verney, after whom Verney Junction was named. The company had a single printing of 600 stamps in February 1891; in July of that year it was absorbed into the Metropolitan Railway. (5). Photo on Page 232. £200-220

Barry Railway. 1898 Cover to Ewen in London endorsed "Per Railway, Post on arrival at Barry" bearing a 1d lilac and 2d letter stamp (5th printing, No.3055) both cancelled by manuscript cross, the railway stamp also cancelled by superb oval "BARRY RAILWAY COMPANY / 10 OCT. 98 / COACHING DEPT BARRY", the 1d lilac cancelled the following day by a Barry c.d.s. Also the first sheet of twelve stamps from the 5th printing, numbered 2801-2812, superb mint, and a 1903 letter on Barry Railway notepaper. A scarce pair, the cover very fine. (3). East London Railway. 1898 1d Postal stationery envelope to Whitby, endorsed "Post at Whitby" and bearing a 2d red railway stamp (fourth printing), the envelope and railway stamp both cancelled "BRADWELL" in red, the envelope further cancelled by a Whitby 875 duplex. The reverse bears a red label "VIA / MARCH & G.N. & G.E JOINT / RAILWAYS". Also used fifth printing 2d red stamps, type I with Shoreditch or Shadwell cancels, type II with Shadwell (& Sleaford duplex) or Whitechapel cancels. A superb and rare cover. (5).   London & South Western Railway. 1916 Commercial cover with return address of the Fortescue Arms Hotel at South Molton Road, Chumleigh, sent to the War Office in London franked KGV 1d and a 2d railway letter stamp (small fault), both tied by London S.E machine, the railway stamp also tied by fine violet "SOUTH MOLTON ROAD / 17 APR 1916/ CANCELLED" c.d.s. Also two single railway stamps both precancelled by crossed "CHAPELTON", and a real photo postcard of the L.S.W.R Up Plymouth Express near Earlsfield. Beveridge in Moffat, probably from her husband Erskine Beveridge (producer of the finest damask table-cloths, with copies of photos of Erskine and his St. Leonards factory), with a 1d lilac tied by Moffat c.d.s and 2d letter stamp (first printing) tied by blue crayon cross. Also three single stamps from the first printing, one used with April 1892 Maryport c.d.s, the other two mint.   1818-37 Entire letters concerning parliamentary elections in the rotten borough of Fowey, nearly all to or from Alexander Campbell who was first elected one of the two Fowey MPs in 1818 after the House of Commons found the winning candidate Lucy guilty of bribery and overturned the result. A fascinating series of letters, all with transcriptions of the contents which include much political intrigue and chicanery, and almost make present day politicians appear honest! One letter is from Campbell's political adversary Joseph Austen, who suggest a meeting in order to agree an understanding between the candidates. Postal markings include "FOWEY", mileage marks of Bodmin, Lostwithiel and Fowey, etc. (19). £250-300

Lamberhurst. 1788 (Oct 31) Entire letter from Bayham Abbey addressed to "Francis Freeling Esq., Surveyor General of the Post Office" and endorsed "Official", delivered free of charge, with a fine "LAMBER / HURST" handstamp (KT 616) and London arrival c.d.s. The writer complains about the continued late arrival of newspapers; a postscript sends his regards to Mr Palmer (John Palmer, Surveyor and Comptroller General at the Post Office) and asks that his complaint be placed before him. Stone Crouch. 1707 (Jan 18) Entire letter addressed "For Mr Arthur Lake at Clements Inne near Temple Barr Westminster" charged 2d, the reverse with "IA/20" Bishop Mark and a fine strike of straight line "STONECROUCH" (KT 1118, NE joined), superbly displayed as an upright strike with the flap open.
