Click to view full image... First Opium War. 1841 (Jan 23) Entire letter written from Chusan by an Officer, C. Edwards, to his mother in England, endorsed "Favored by Capt. Payne, 18th R.I Regt" (Royal Irish) and posted unpaid upon arrival in England with a Bristol c.d.s (Sep 20), charged 2d. The letter includes "long before you receive this you will have heard of the termination I hope of our campaign ...... the negotiations are going on at Canton ...... we have had some interesting accounts of the prisoners the Chinese took, one was a Captain in the Madras Artillery, he was overpowered by numbers and when first taken he was barbarously treated being confined in irons in a cage ..... the other prisoners were the crew of a brig (the Kite) at least such as were saved from the wreck, the marines have died, a lady the wife of the Master is still in their hands .....". Franked on the front by France 1877-90 Peace & Commerce 25c bistre tied by "SHANGHAI / CHINE" French P.O c.d.s (Feb 4) with a second strike on the front. Click to view full image... 1914 Marc Pourpe flight. 1914 (Jan 22) Letter written at Halfa, the envelope addressed to Lady Stamfordham at St. James Palace, London, handed to Marc Pourpe and flown by him to Cairo where the cover was posted bearing Egypt 5m + Sudan 5m both cancelled at Heliopolis (Feb 13) and handstamped "POSTE AERIENNE / L.N.A / MARC POURPE / 1913-14 / CAIRE-KHARTOUM" in blue. Backstamped at Cairo, the flap with "THE PALACE / KHARTOUM". The letter includes "Just a line to take the opportunity of writing to you by aerial post. The airman Pourpe returns from Khtm today & is taking letters which he will post at Cairo or somewhere north. I suppose he will put his own postmark on them as he has brought a special stamp with him." A fine and rare Marc Pourpe flight cover with enclosed letter. Photo on Inside Back Cover. £2,800-3,200
