Philippi & Co, Ibo" printed on the flap, sent to Germany franked by first printing 75r and 100r, second printing 115r on 150r London surcharge and fourth printing 15r and 25r "PROVISORIO" London overprints and three 20r stamps, two of these 20r stamps on the reverse. All cancelled by hexagonal Ibo datestamps with an Ibo registration label, backstamped at Beira, London and Hamburg. A scarce and attractive franking. Photo on Page 120. £400-500

Very unusual, the recipient did not apparently realise the reply card was valid for return postage without an added Nyassa stamp being necessary. Photo on Page 120. £180-220

Click to view full image...Click to view full image... 1910 (Dec 6) Two picture postcards of Ibo, numbered 1 and 3, sent to the Metropolitan Correspondence Club in Milwaukee, each with a 75r stamp on the front tied by an Ibo datestamp, received on Jan 11. The apparent overfranking explained by the message on the first card, "I am sending 4 illustrated P.C from this place ..... They are all franked with 75reis stamps bought at the Post Office for 20reis, the stock of low value stamps being exhausted they are selling the ...." A fascinating pair of cards, proving the shortage of 20r foreign postcard rate stamps in Ibo at this date. How the Post Office accounted for the sale of 75r stamps at 20r each is not clear. (2). 1911 King Manuel II "REPUBLICA" Overprint Issue

On February 3, 1908 King Carlos was shot in Lisbon, and his second son King Manual came to the throne. Carlos stamps continued in use till 1911 and a new issue was ordered with the portrait King Manuel II. The new stamps had been printed when, on 5 October 1910, the monarchy was overthrown and Portugal became a Republic. The new issue was therefore overprinted REPUBLICA before being sent to Nyassa. The first printing of all values was archived without overprint, but some found their way onto the philatelic market.

The remnants of the German forces in East Africa crossed into Portuguese territory in November 1917, and were pursued by British forces from the Nyasaland Field force; the Germans finally surrendered in November 1918. British forces could send letters free, but had to use local Portuguese stamps for payment of registration fees or parcel postage, and four sheets (200 stamps) of each value of the 1911 Portuguese Nyassa stamps were supplied to the office at Mtengula for the use of the Nyasaland Field Force. New Currency Surcharges in Centavos & Escudos

The new currency of Centavos and Escudos was introduced in Portugal in 1912, and by 1914 most of the Overseas Provinces were using stamps in the new denomination. 100 reis = 1 centavo. 100c = 1 Escudo

1918 - Local Surcharges and REPUBLICA overprint on 1901 and 1903 surcharged

King Carlos I Issues

During, and immediately after WWI, few civilian or Nyassa Company personnel remained; thus few letters are known, and few stamps were needed. In 1918 the small remaining stock of King Carlos I stamps were surcharged locally with new currency values. These were valid for postage in conjunction with the existing King Manuel II old currency stamps overprinted REPUBLICA.
