French Postal Agent in Jersey | The French Post Office had offices in both Guernsey and Jersey from the 1820s until both agencies were suppressed on 1st June 1843 as a consequence of the new Anglo-French postal convention. Both offices dealt with the collection and dispatch of mails between the islands and France. The following letter is the only postal item recorded from either of these French postal agencies.
|
|
1842 (May 4) Entire from the French postal agent Theodore Fontaine in Jersey, addressed to "Monsieur le Directeur General des Postes, Paris" requesting that "as he had to dispatch express packets every day to the postmasters of St. Malo and Granville which called for the use of large quantities of wrapping paper could he be supplied with some for the use of his office, also some wax". The address panel headed "Service" and delivered free of charge, with red "OUTRE-MER / ST. MALO" c.d.s and Paris arrival backstamp, the letter handstamped inside with the arrival cachet "CABINET PARTICULIER (POSTES)" dated 6 May. A unique and important letter. Photo on Page 184. £400-500
