Belcher to his parents in Faringdon all endorsed "Lieut John Fenton Commr Piercer Gun Vessel", the first posted unpaid and charged 8d, the other two prepaid at the 1d concession rate, all handstamped "ISLE OF / WIGHT" type IW29 (2) or similar 35x13mm type unlisted in the County Catalogue. All three letters are headed from Cowes Harbour or Cowes Roads, the second letter of Feb. 23rd recounting a false alarm that 500 sail of French had landed on Deal Beach and giving his squadron of five gun vessels as The Piercer, The Plumper, The Fury, The Ferrett and The Forester; the third letter of May 30th including "I have been in a little skirmish. On Thursday last we perceived a vessel coming into the Roads under English colours, of course we took no particular notice of her, but soon after she tack'd, made sail, done'd her English colours and hoisted French ones and was making sail for the coast of France. The Commodore made the signal for us to fire which we did, at first only one shot across her bows. Instead of coming too she crowded more sail, we then fired 4 shot into her. She returned 5 shot but did no damage, we had unfortunately hauled down our sails the day before to black the masts and yards, consequently could not go in pursuit of her". Scarce early examples of the concession rate, possibly an abuse of the concession as the writer appears to be a midshipman. (3). Photo on Page 158 in printed catalogue. £300-350
