Civilian cover from Beirut to Mexico paid in cash with "FIELD POST OFFICE / SZ 8" skeleton c.d.s and red manuscript "1pt", sent to Port Said where a Palestine 1pi ultramarine was applied over this manuscript rate and tied by "BASE ARMY POST OFFICE / T" skeleton (Nov 12), reverse with blue censor seal tied by "PASSED BY CENSOR / No. 10", Port Said and arrival datestamps. Small opening nick at upper edge, otherwise fine and very scarce. Firebrace did not record any civilian covers sent through the Army Postal Service addressed to Mexico. An exceptional destination. Rhodesia. 1917 (Aug 15) Stampless O.A.S cover to New South Wales with Salisbury c.d.s and violet straight line "CENSORED", the first example we have seen and apparently previously unrecorded. Despite the censored cachet the enclosed letter is headed from "No. 1662 1 / Coy (2 Platoon) 2nd Rhodesia Regt, Salisbury" and includes "I expect you have heard Neil O'Donnell has been killed, also Bramwell Adams, Rowland Adams his brother has been wounded. Bramwell of course went home with the Australians. We are expected to leave any moment now en route for Europe. We are to be attached to the 1st South African Brigade in France ..... our Regiment has got the reputation of being the finest fighters in East Africa. The 2nd Loyal North Lancashire Regt and 25th Royal Fusiliers absolutely swear by us and the 130th Baluchis (an Indian Regt) will not fight with any other but us, they refused to fight when ordered to accompany the 7th South African Infantry into action". There was no censorship in Seychelles in WW1, and censored covers to or from the island are scarce. Both ex McCloy collection, referred to in his book. (2).   Sudan. 1917 Stampless covers with enclosed letters written by an Egyptian or Sudanese soldier and sent as free O.A.S mail to Egypt, one with pink "SUDAN / OPENED BY CENSOR / 5" seal (Firebrace type CRL3 with Govt Press - 1916 imprint) tied triangular "PASSED / BY / CENSOR / 11 / SUDAN", Port Sudan and Shellal-Halfa T.P.O datestamps, the other with blue Egypt type censor seal and boxed "PASSED / CENSOR / 6", Port Taufiq and Cairo c.d.s. Also triangular Sudan censor cachets No. 9 on a cover from Cairo to Port Sudan, and No. 100 on 5m envelope to India cancelled Halfa-Khartoum T.P.O c.d.s.   Tonga/Fiji. 1916 Cover from Nukualofa to Sweden franked Tonga 2d, sent via Fiji where it was handstamped "PASSED BY CENSOR", backstamped at Suva and Tosse. A few minor marks, otherwise fine and rare, very few WWI censored covers known from Tonga and this is believed to be the only such cover recorded censored in transit in Fiji. £250-300

  Trinidad. 1917 Stampless picture postcard printed in Port of Spain, sent to England endorsed "On Active Service" with violet "PASSED BY CENSOR" and London "Received From H.M Ship / No Charge To Be Raised" machine (Oct 2). Also two other cards with messages written by Australian sailors in the West Indies, one a real photo of "Neptunes visit on Board "Aorangi" 21.2.15", not posted. Naval mail from Trinidad is unusual; the "Aorangi" was a support ship in the Caribbean for H.M.A.S "Melbourne". (3). £100-120

Castor, British Prisoner of War, Tokyo Camp, Japan" with violet cachet "c/o PRISONERS OF WAR / INFORMATION BUREAU / TOKYO", routed via India. Censor cachets applied at Stalag XXID, in India and Japan (both inside and outside the lettersheet), red manuscript "7D" (= Nippon Mining Co, Hidachi), the message just 25 words. Click to view full image... 1941 (Jan 17) Window envelope (address missing) from Esher with black cachet "Moorgate Post Office / has re-opened at / 33, Eldon St., E.C.2", used after the blitzed Post Office was reopened; and a registered 2 1/2d lettercard uprated 3d both cancelled by the distinctive "L.P.R / 6 AUG 41 / LONDON C.O / MOBILE P.O / No, 1" used in London E.C on this one day only after much of the East End was destroyed in the blitz, this c.d.s only used on registered mail. Click to view full image... 1941 (Mar 14) Reused cover with wartime economy label posted from Silsden to Skipton franked 2 1/2d, the lower edge a little waterstained, handstamped boxed "DELAYED THROUGH / ENEMY ACTION". Just three examples of this rare cachet have been recorded, all on covers of 14/16 March sent to or from Skipton, where the cachet was presumably applied. P.S "Portsdown". 1941 (Sep 19) 2 1/2d Postal stationery envelope from Havant to Ventnor, a little minor staining, handstamped violet "DAMAGED AS A RESULT / OF ENEMY ACTION". Recovered from the Southern Railways Portsmouth to Ryde steamer which struck a mine on the morning of September 20th, and sank with the loss of 23 passengers and crew; the rear part of the ship came to rest on a sand bank from where survivors were rescued and some mail was recovered. Also a postcard from Freshwater (Sep 21) with message "lucky I did not get the boat yesterday previous to the one I did, struck a mine 1/2 mile out". (2). Also see lot 957. Click to view full image... 1944 (Feb 19) O.H.M.S Wartime economy label from the Ministry of Pensions in Blackpool to London, with the front of the reused cover to which it was applied, both showing severe water damage and signs of scorching, enclosed within a Mount Pleasant R.L.S ambulance envelope posted at London E.C (Feb 23) with an enclosed explanatory slip "The enclosed article has been recovered from a mail which has been damaged by enemy action. The inconvenience caused is regretted. Returned Letter Section, Mount Pleasant, London E.C.1". The only example of this R.L.S explanatory slip we have recorded.
