  1901 Picture postcard to London, the address panel headed "Hospital Ship Orcana 3-6-01" by the writer, posted from Las Palmas (June 11) franked Spain 10c, scarce. £80-100

H.S "Princess of Wales"
The steam yacht "Midnight Sun" was purchased by Princess Alexandra and fitted out as a hospital ship at a personal cost of £10,000. Renamed "Princess of Wales" it served from December 1899 until December 1900 making two trips between Britain and South Africa, and various trips around the Cape and Natal coast.

  1899 (Nov 17) Cover addressed to Sir Donald Currie G.C.M.G, Gaith, Aberfeldy, Perthshire N.B" with 1d lilac cancelled at Kings Lynn, the reverse with Sandringham and Aberfeldy datestamps and "Sandringham, Norfolk" printed on the flap; the enclosed letter on Sandringham notepaper written and signed by Charlotte Knollys thanks Sir Donald for his donation and for all he has done for her hospital ship, and says the Princess is going to write to him herself. Sir Donald was Chairman of the Currie Shipping Line. A unique letter. £180-220

Click to view full image... 1900 (Feb) Cover with "Hospital Ship / "Princess of Wales"" printed in the upper left corner below an embossed Red Cross, posted from Funchal to Scotland franked 65r, on the first return voyage of the ship from South Africa to England. The enclosed three page letter, on notepaper also headed with the embossed Red Cross and ship name, written by Private A. Machie, 2 Bn. The Black Watch, who was wounded at Magersfontein on 11th December 1899. He writes "My leg is getting on a treat, the swelling is beginning to go down now ..... the patients are very well looked after on board this ship .... we land at Southampton. I expect to land about the 28th and entrain for Netley .... We had a concert on board two nights ago. It was got up amongst ourselves and when the officers heard of it they joined in with us, making it a great success". The envelope a little soiled with two opening tears at upper edge, the letter fine. Very scarce, the cover illustrated on page 67 of Peter Prime's book on Boer War medical services. Redirected to "Hospital Ship, Durban" but endorsed "What ship" and "not Simla", again redirected to "Netley Hospital, England" and then to "Naas, Ireland", backstamps include Lourenco Marques, Durban, Point, F.P.O 4 and Naas. Click to view full image... 1900 (May 20) Natal 1d postcard posted from Cape Town to India, the stamp with "O" written below and alongside to show it was invalid and the Cape Town c.d.s applied away from the stamp, marked "T10" with datestamps of Durban and India and boxed "FOREIGN POSTAGE DUE / TWO ANNAS". The message is headed "Hosp. S. Simla, Cape Town" and includes "I had a rough journey to Durban which has rather knocked me up .... the ship seems v. comfortable, am in a nice airy ward".   1900 (June 27) G.B 1/2d Postcard from London to Up Park Camp, Jamaica, handstamped "T" with a 1d charge and Up Park Camp squared circle. The reverse with printed heading "Royal South Hants Infirmary, Southampton", crossed out and altered to "S.S Simla", the message reading "Its a beautiful ship, a good P&O, usually goes to India. Officers, Gentlemen, we have no troops - only 27 nurses & 2 doctors - as shes a hospital ship going back empty ..... the empty sick wards are beautiful". A little light staining, scarce and unusual to Jamaica. £150-180

The "Carthage" was probably at Nagasaki to offload patients from the fighting in and around Peking. Also a fine c.1895 photo of the Carthage by a Gravesend photographer. A scarce card. (2). £120-150

  S.S "Medic". 1913 (Mar 5) Picture postcard to London with two British Levant 1/2d stamps cancelled at the British Post Office Constantinople, the message headed "British Red Cross Society, Constantinople" and including "The ship is late in arriving here so have another night to sleep in hospital instead of going aboard tonight. The ship is the S.S "Medic", a new ship". Also a peacetime card of the ship. Small edge tear at right, otherwise fine and a scarce card from a British Red Cross volunteer during the Balkan Wars. £80-100

  "Savoia". 1900-01 Japanese 4s postcards both written from the hospital ship "Savoia" whilst in Yokohama harbour, both to Germany, one with the address panel headed with the senders details "an bord Lazaret Schiff Savoia". The "Savoia" was a HAPAG liner chartered by the German Navy from August 1900 to March 1901 to transport sick and wounded between Taku and Yokohama; unlike the two regular hospital ships "Gera" and "Wittekind" then supporting the forces in China it had no postal facilities on board.   Confederate Ship "Matilda". 1864 (Oct 1) Legal certified copy of a letter headed "Hospital Transport Matilda" from P. Milford, Surgeon in Charge of the Steamer, stating that an explosion of the boiler on the ship caused Sergt. Cyrus Bidwell, E. Co 7th N.C Volunteers, to lose a knapsack, haversack, canteen and shelter tent. The "Matilda" operated on the James River in Virginia evacuating sick and wounded from the battlefields to general hospitals. Very few items recorded from Confederate hospital transports. £80-100

H.S "S.R Spaulding". 1862 (Aug 5) Cover bearing a 3c stamp (faults) with central boxed "PAID" cancel and a Boston c.d.s, addressed to "Dr A.L Norris on board steamship Hospital S.R Spaulding in care of Sanitary Com 49 Broadway N. York City", the enclosed letter to "Brother Norris" with news of various quaker friends. The "S.R Spaulding" was employed as a hospital transport on the James River between Fortress Monroe and New York or Philadelphia, supporting the Army of the Potomac. Click to view full image... H.S "Elm City". 1862 (Sep 21) Small cover with a 3c stamp cancelled by a central cork obliterator and a Providence R.I c.d.s alongside, addressed to "John P. Burt, Steamer Elm City, New Haven, Conn.". The steamer "Elm City" was transferred to the U.S Sanitary Commission in May 1862 and fitted out as a hospital transport with 400 beds. She operated on the Pamunkey River transporting wounded and sick from the Peninsular campaign to hospitals in Washington, New York and Philadelphia. An attractive cover.   USS "Euterpe" / H.S "Thomas Powell". 1865 Jan 5) Letter from Lt S.R Goddard 30th NSC, 1st Brigade 3rd Div 25th AC, Army of the James, headed "On Board the Euterpe, James River". He includes "We landed from our Wilmington expedition on new years day and went into camp. I immediately made application for a leave of absence but before it could get through the proper channels we were ordered to reembark for a second expedition. It is supposed our destination is Wilmington again and I hope this time with better success than before .... We are nearing Fortress Monroe and I must close my letter for the mail is going ashore there"; 1866 (May 26) partly printed receipt for the Steamer "Thomas Powell" bearing a 2c revenue stamp; and a reproduction photo of Union troops on the deck of a hospital ship. The "Thomas Powell" operated as a hospital transport during the civil war, on the James River from Point of Rocks to New York. The "Euterpe" was initially a stationary hospital ship on the Pamunkey River in Virginia, and later operated on the James River. This letter was written shortly after the first expedition against Fort Fisher (located at the mouth of Cape Fear River, guarding the approaches to the Port of Wilmington) and prior to the second expedition which captured Fort Fisher on January 15th. U.S.S "Missouri". 1899 (Nov 12) Cover with "U.S.A HOSPITAL SHIP / MISSOURI" printed in the upper left corner, bearing Ceylon 15c tied by a Colombo duplex, sent to an army officer at the West Point military academy in New York with arrival backstamps. The British registered (but American owned) freighter "Missouri" was loaned by her owner to the U.S Army for use as a hospital ship during the 1898 Spanish-American war, the British officers all applying for American citizenship; after the war the U.S government bought the ship and used her as a hospital ship in the Pacific and Indian Oceans before she later became an army transport. Click to view full image... U.S.S "Relief". 1900 (Jan 19) Cover to an army officer in Phoenix, Arizona, bearing three Philippines overprint 2c stamps (one damaged) tied by "MIL. STA. No 1 MANILA / PHIL. ISLDS / 1" duplexs, the enclosed letter written from "USA Hospital Ship Relief, Manila". The writer comments that "the whole thing could be closed in two weeks if the Generals in Command only wanted it finished". The "Relief" was purchased as a hospital ship in 1898 for service during the Spanish-American War but continued to serve until the Philippines insurrection was finally defeated at the end of 1902.   British P.O Abroad. 1916 Cover bearing Morocco Agencies 25c from Tangier to an army Captain at the Sultan Hussein Club in Alexandria, redirected to "British Red Cross Hospital No. 7, Montaza", with triangular army censor No. 3147 and violet star handstamp; and 1919 registered cover with G.B 2d + 2 1/2d tied British A.P.O Constantinople c.d.s. addressed to South Africa, censor seal and Port Said transit backstamp.   Bahamas. 1919 (Jan 29) Cover from Nassau to Havana franked 1/2d + War Tax 1d pair with scarce "BY AIR SERVICE / NASSAU TO MIAMI" cachet on the front, the reverse with Miami machine and violet "PASSED BY CENSOR", only recorded on a few covers of late 1918 or early 1919 from Bahamas and clearly applied at Nassau, this example probably unique on a cover carried on this first experimental flight from Nassau to Miami. £250-300

Click to view full image... Belgian Congo. 1916 (Aug 30) Belgian Congo 5c postcard with a picture of Mount Ruwenzori, headed "From Signalman A. Hedger RNVR, Brit. Expdy Force, L. Tanganyika" and marked "S.M" (Service Militaire); written from Kindu to South Australia, posted at Kongolo. Hedger writes "another week at least to Tanganyika. How nice is travelling, especially when you have a black boy who understands all your wants & often anticipates them". The British sent a small naval force overland to Lake Tanganyika in 1915 with parts for two motor boats which were assembled on the lake; these fought and destroyed the two German boats on the lake and most of the British naval forces were then withdrawn, though a small naval force remained until the end of the war to crew the two British vessels. Very little mail is recorded from the British naval force on Lake Tanganyika, and this is the only item from this force to Australia that we have seen. Photo on Page 31 in printed catalogue. £280-350

A scarce item of Australian naval mail, the only recorded item to have local civil censorship rather than a naval censor applied on the ship. £300-350

Cyprus/Egypt - Wreck Mail. 1918 Cover from Cyprus with 2pi on the reverse tied by Limassol c.d.s (Mar 6), and the reverse side of a postcard from Egypt (Mar 11) franked 5m both to Japan, both items damaged by water, the card with wavy bars censor cachet, the cover with Egypt censor seal and cachets and red "ARRIVED IN THIS CONDITION". Both items recovered from the S.S "Andre Lebon" which ran aground on the Sultan Shoal near Singapore on April 7th, the damaged vessel finally being brought into Singapore on April 19th.   Gambia. 1916 Registered cover and 1919 picture postcard both to Switzerland, the cover franked 1d pair + 2 1/2d with censor seal tied oval "OUVERT / 421 / Par l'AUTORITE MILITAIRE", the card with violet boxed "RELEASED BY THE / BRITISH MILITARY AUTHORITIES".   Gilbert & Ellice Is. 1918 (Dec 11) Long O.H.M.S registered cover from Ocean Island to a Belgian Sergeant interned at The Hague, Holland and redirected to Belgium, bearing a red registration label and franked 1911 Pines 1/2d, 2 1/2d + KGV 1/2d pair, War Tax 1d pair, censored with "CENSURE MILITAIRE" seal, backstamped at Sydney, sGravenhage and in Belgium. Two vertical folds clear of all stamps, otherwise fine, very few WW1 censored covers recorded from the Gilbert & Ellice Islands. £200-250

  Hong Kong. 1915-18 Covers (3, one registered) and a picture postcard comprising cover to India with violet circular "PASSED BY CENSOR / (crown) / MADRAS"; cover to Sweden with Russian censor cachet and seal and transit backstamp of Petrograd; registered cover to Shiraz, Persia with India censor seals and violet "PASSED CENSOR / 22 / BOMBAY", backstamped at the Indian and Persian offices at Linga and at Shiraz; and postcard to Chile with violet "PASSED BY CENSOR / 124" applied in USA, Kobe and Antofagasta transit and arrival datestamps.
