S4) charged 2/8 as a double letter, endorsed by the recipient "This letter contained no enclosure, 30 Nov 39 T. Wilson" and returned to the Ship Letter Office where a rebate of 1/4 was given and the letter handstamped by the oval "REBATE / 30 NO 30 / 1839 / SHIP LETTER OFFICE" (only recorded Oct. - Dec. 1839). Also type GA3 duplex code "B" tying 1d lilac to piece, and 1877 4d green plate 16 (S.G. 153) cancelled by the type GA5 duplex code "B" (the only G&A cancel seen by us on a surface printed stamp above the 2 1/2d value).   Columba Steamer - Single Ring c.d.s. 1880-92 Entire letter and covers all backstamped with Columba Steamer single ring c.d.s comprising type GA4 (20mm c.d.s) code "A" with 1d cancelled at Tarbert or code "B" with 1d cancelled at Rothesay, type GA6 (19mm c.d.s, with side arcs) code "A" on entire letter with 1d cancelled at Campbeltown, code "B" on 1d envelope to Germany uprated 1/2d and 1d or cover to Australia franked 2 1/2d both cancelled at Kirn, or on cover with 1d cancelled at Lochgilphead. Also a proof impression on type GA4 without date or code on piece, 1884 cover addressed to the S.S "Columba" at Ardrishaig, and a 1901 postcard with Glasgow Exhibition c.d.s. A good lot; Mackay only recorded a single example of GA4 code "A" and no examples of GA6 with code "A". (9). £270-320

Iona Steamer Datestamps used on the Chevalier. 1883-91 Covers (6) all posted during the winter months when the G&A service was actually operated by the "Chevalier" but used the Iona steamer datestamps, all code "B" datestamps comprising double ring "IONA STEAMER / 163" cancelling 1d lilacs (2 covers, one with Ardfern backstamp, also on four single stamps) or used as backstamps on covers from Ardfern or Innellan; single ring c.d.s backstamp type GA4 on cover from Rothesay to Dunoon; and 1883 cover from Ardrishaig to Innellan redirected to Dunoon with both the type GA4 c.d.s and GA3 duplex applied so the numeral is off the cover therefore appearing as a c.d.s. Chevalier Steamer - Named c.d.s. 1903 (Jan 17) Printed North British Railway Co notice of a special meeting prepaid 1/2d in cash from Edinburgh to Kintyre and redirected to Lochgilphead backstamped with the "Chevalier" type GA15 code "A" c.d.s ('K & ARDR" not struck, otherwise superb), also with Greenock and Lochgilphead datestamps. The enclosed proxy form was completed by the recipient with a 1d stamp applied. An unusual use of the rare code "A" c.d.s used on the outward morning sailing, this code "A" datestamp only recorded used in 1907 by Mackay. Also a postcard of the ship. At this date internal registration only operated within Ireland, and was not extended to the rest of Britain until 1841; a registered free frank is most exceptional. These green wrappers were used from 1841 until 1857 to enclose registered letters; they were retained by the receiving office before being destroyed, and very few survive.
