  Evacuation Mail. 1946 Illustrated cover "Last Tin Can Mail Evacuation Cover, December 1946" with cachets of the M.V "Matua" and Tonga 2 1/2d cancelled in manuscript by the Niuafoou Postmaster dated "21/12/46", and 1947 illustrated William Finan cover with cachet "Final and complete evacuation of Niuafoou by the Tongan Government Yacht "Hifofua" took place on October 9, 1947" and Tonga 1 1/2d cancelled in manuscript by the Purser of the "Hifofua", dated October 6th 1947 at Niuafoou.   1767 Entire letters from Richard Maitland, an Officer in the 43rd Regiment, addressed to "The Hon. Coll. Alexander Maitland, Wellbeck Street, London", both privately carried, one endorsed "by favour of Major Le Grand". One letter concerns Major Le Grand who has been visiting his daughter, who is married to Lt. Coll. Prevost of the 60th Regt.; the other concerns Lt. De Conte, an officer on half pay, who is in need of money. Both with vertical file folds and a few edge faults but uncommon US Colonial Period officer's letters. (2). £240-280

Click to view full image... 1770 Entire letter to Marblehead rated "4", backstamped with fine red "PHILA / DELPHIA" and a "9/AP" Bishop Mark. The printed letter concerns a proposal for "gentlemen in the New England Government to make consignments of fish or negroes for sale in the Island of Barbados", a little splitting at folds, otherwise a fine Colonial Period letter with interesting content regarding the trade in slaves.   1785 (Sep 13) Entire letter from Newport, R.I, addressed to "Capt. Nathl Briggs of ship Three Friends, Africa, p. Capt. Wolf", the business contents concerning the slave trade with details given of various ships, captains and cargos. These include Capt Sherman in the Brig Betsey who arrived in South Carolina with 140 very good slaves, 133 of which were sold at over £53 a head, the remaining seven being ruffage. Capt. Sherman had called into St. Lucia to try the market but was informed several vessels had been seized there & in several other islands for coming into port without obtaining permission, and was advised to immediately go away. Dan Gardner arrived at Charleston and sold his slaves there for £58.10 on average, carried in 115 for cargo and 220oz gold dust; the best slaves for the Carolina market are those from 16 to 25 years old. The letter has extensive staining and wear with several holes, and has been laid down on archival paper to preserve it. Despite these faults a very rare and detailed letter on the slave trade and the only such letter addressed to the Captain of a slave ship in Africa that we have seen. £500-600

  1920 (Jan 12) Stampless O.A.S cover to George King in London, backstamped by Indian F.P.O 330 and a London arrival c.d.s. This F.P.O used at Hodeidah from 5th October 1919 until 1st February 1920, the only F.P.O to be used in Yemen after World War One. Very scarce. £200-250

Recipes 2013-2015 for the 1904 3r - 5r stamp issue with separate recipes for the red flag and the main stamp colour, a pair of dummy stamps applied for each of these two colours; recipes 2016-2020 for the 1a or 2 1/2a envelopes, 2a registration envelope, 1/2a and 1a postcards and newspaper wrappers, each recipe bearing a block of four dummy stamps.
