Knysna. 1861 (Apr 23) Entire from Knysna to Cape Town bearing 1861 4d pale grey-blue woodblock (S.G. 14a, three margins, crossed by light vertical crease) tied by triangular "CGH" obliterator, red oval Knysna datestamp on the front with similar Cape Town arrival backstamp. The entire with light creasing, lower left corner with "LOT 2" written many years ago in light ink and some white staining and thinning of the paper.   c.1864 Cover to "Mrs Newdigate, Buccleugh, Plettenberg Bay", the correspondence known to be from Knysna, bearing De La Rue 4d steel blue (S.G. 19c, two margins, just touched at lower right base) tied by partial obliterator, light overall staining and seal removed from the reverse, but still a reasonable example of this elusive shade on cover. £140-160

George usually used the "17" numeral but strangely also held the "34" numeral at the same time; this "34" numeral was very rarely used at George before being reallocated to Wellington in 1890. Tucker" with an internal note "Refunds claims of Burghers & compensation. From Mr J.P Swemmer, George Town 28 June 1882"; the other franked 2d to the "Acting Inspector of Stores, Colonial Commissariat Dept., King Williams Town" charged 8d, endorsed "claim for compensation of Mr Steyl for horse", both covers handstamped oval "WAR DEPARTMENT / 28 MAY 83 / EXAMINED / ACCOUNTING OFFICE". A postal agency was established at Schoonberg in late 1856 with Peregrine Richardson as its first agent. A fine and scarce pair. (2). £160-180

Also 1901-04 cover with O.R.C 1d tied by Army P.O 43 c.d.s and a postcard from Bulawayo both with Belvidere single ring arrival c.d.s and a Knysna squared circle. (3). £150-180

De Vlugt. 1866 (Apr 18) Entire letter from Vlugt Convict Station written by the Sub-Overseer John Kinnear, addressed to "Wehmeyer Esq, Post Mr, Wolve Kraal" bearing a 4d stamp (perfs trimmed off at top) cancelled by five manuscript lines. The letter reads "On the 27th ulto I delivered a letter to the Post Boy "Joshua" and addressed Mrs McDonald, care of Mr Varney, Green Point for posting at your office, the letter contained a sovereign, was marked "Registered" on the left hand corner and had stamps affixed to the value of 10d, the Post Master here has had a communication from Genl Post Office from which it appears that this letter is not forthcoming. Will you therefore be pleased to inform me if it was deposited at your office. I further beg to add that I gave the Post Boy 2/6 with a memorandum requesting you to affix the necessary stamp providing the letter was overweight, he returned the money saying that you had said it was alright". The Convict Station moved to De Vlugt in 1864 and a Post Office was opened at the same time, but apparently never had a datestamp. Cape archives contain several letters also cancelled in manuscript, but this is believed to be the only letter outside archives from this rare Convict Station Post Office.   Gouritz River/Blands Drift. 1881-89 Covers from the Gouritz River postal agency (located at Blands Drift) to Cape Town or Winberg, the first with "3" on 3d cancelled by manuscript lines, the second with 1d cancelled manuscript "Blands Drift", both with arrival backstamps. The 1881 cover with staining at left edge, the 1885 cover with some edge faults and overall light staining but probably a unique pair. Also 1882-1909 covers (2), card and a front with Blands Drift c.d.s, the 1882 cover also with "304" BONC, two also with Gouritz River Bridge c.d.s. An interesting group. (6). £260-320

  Meirings Poort. 1859 Stampless official wrapper to The Postmaster General, Cape Town, signed "P.J Meiring PO Agent" with Cape Town backstamp; and 1904 postcard with superb Meirings Poort c.d.s. Meirings Poort was named after Petrus J. Meiring who became the first postal agent in 1858, though no datestamp is known before 1860. Putzel rates all mail from this office as very rare.
