Cypher Seals. Collection in two albums of the cypher seals applied over the ends of the tin strip used to apply embossed revenue stamps on paper to documents and therefore prevent stamps being unstapled and reused. Stamps include the very rare first type William III Cypher of c1701, both dies with Queen Anne Cypher (4, two on documents), and all later George I - George V types. A fine collection comprising single seals (45), pieces (160) and complete documents (14), a few seals unused including VR strip of four, some pieces bearing two cypher seals. (219). 1919 (Oct 1) Stampless registered O.H.M.S cover to Coventry with London A.S registration label, boxed "MINISTRY OF MUNITIONS / OF WAR / 1 OCT 1919 / WHITEHALL PLACE" and large "BY AIR POST" with "Birmingham, Castle Bromwich" added in manuscript. Flown by the government emergency air service on the first day of the six day railway strike. Private letters were flown between six cities for an additional charge of 2/- per oz but the service also carried official mail, very little of which was kept; we have recorded fewer than six flown official stampless letters of which this is the only registered example. The Ron Hake Collection contained one other example of a 1d pink envelope cancelled with the skeleton datestamp, dated Feb. 17; described as one of just two recorded this one cover sold in that April 2016 auction for £950 + premium. 1876 (Aug 15) Memorandum from Hugh Moore & Co, wholesale druggists in Dublin, to "The Storekeeper, General Post Office, Dublin", reading "Sir, We will thank you to send us by return of post a book containing the tariff for telegrams to all parts of the world, for which we enclose stamps 2/3 1/2". The reverse bears a block of twelve of the 1856-79 2d blue plate 15 (NA-PD) each tied by vertical barred obliterator with a capital "S" within circle, the other 3 1/2d of stamps presumably used as postage on the package to Dublin.
