Islay - Bowmore Village. 1851-59 Covers (4), an entire and a piece, the covers all with a 1d red cancelled at Greenock backstamped with blue "BOWMORE / VILLAGE" undated circle (3, 1851-54) or type V straight line Scots local handstamp (1859), the 1856 entire with the 1d red cancelled by boxed type VIII Scots local cancel and overcancelled by the Greenock "163" numeral. Also a 1d red on piece solely cancelled by the boxed type VIII Scots local. The 1851-54 covers backstamped by boxed Bowmore datestamp, the 1856-59 covers with Port Ellen double arc datestamp. The 1856 entire with some staining and a heavy vertical fold but still very scarce, the others fine. (6). £300-350

Rye/Winchelsea. 1757 Entire letter addressed to "Mr Geor. Slate liveing at Smallhithe Ferry near Tenterden; But now at Rye at ye Red Lyon or at ye Rye Gally or some of ye Publick Houses"; the letter reads "After I left you at Winchelsea Ferry I went down to Mr Catts at ye White Hart near ye New Harbour where I found a man which answers exactly to ye description you gave me of him & is now in my custody. So desire you would be very expedious in comeing so directly to send me an answer unto ye above house, meaning the White Hart near the Harbour". An interesting letter with an extraordinary address, written from New Harbour (at Winchelsea), presumably hand delivered. £120-150
