1924-25 Definitives with advertising labels comprising all nineteen issued stamps and adverts with some additional stamps fine mint, also the unissued 60c Express stamp (2) and a few used stamps. The 34 mint stamps include 25c with adverts for "Coen" (2), "Piperno" and "Tagliacozzo" (2), 50c with adverts for "Coen", "Piperno", "Reinach" (2), "Tagliacozzo" (2) and "Tantal" (2), and 1L with "Columbia" adverts (2). 1949 KGVI Perf 13x11 3/4 5c and 10c blocks of four both with upper margins, each stamp locally handstamped violet "SPECIMEN" (Samuel type K4), the 10c block affixed to paper, the 5c block with a little paper adhering but otherwise generally fine. Two attractive blocks each from the unique sheets of 100 (many of the 5c stamps being defective), with photos of the two original sheets and copies of the 1997 B.P.A Certificates for these sheets. KOREA

1886 (May 24) Cover from Decorah, Iowa franked USA 5c, addressed to "Captain Gordon, Royal Marines, Port Hamilton, care of Senior British Naval Officer, Nagasaki, Japan, via San Francisco", backstamped at New York, San Francisco St. Shp, Yokohama and Nagasaki (June 27), minor staining, otherwise fine and scarce. In April 1885 a Royal Marines Detachment occupied Observatory Island, an uninhabited island in the Korean Straits, which the British considered could be an advantageous Naval Base, and which might otherwise be occupied by the Russians; the island and anchorage were re-named Port Hamilton by the British. The island was evacuated in February 1887 after protests from Japan and assurances that no other foreign power would occupy it. Just eight covers recorded from the British occupation, all from this correspondence (sold by Robson Lowe in 1984) from the USA to Capt. Gordon. A rare cover, with an article on the occupation and recorded covers by Kenneth Clark. Photo on Page 47. £400-500
