1883-84 Lilac & Green Issue

Colour Trials

All colour trials were produced by De La Rue in 1884 as part of their experiments into colours, inks and papers to be used for the next stamp issue, the "Jubilee" issue of 1887. Initial trials were on coloured unwatermarked paper, later trials on white paper with Imperial Crown watermark. Trials exist both perf 14 and imperforate. S.G. do not differentiate between these, simply stating "imperforate trials are incomplete and not distinguished", although imperforate trials are probably scarcer than the perforated trials. Details of the production of these colour trials, and of later proofs and colour trials for the "Jubilee" issue, are given in "The De La Rue Years, 1878-1910", Volume 2, by W.A Wiseman, published in 1990.

Essays and die proofs of dummy stamps in various designs were laid before the 1884 stamp committee, all with the inscription "De La Rue London" and corner letters "HB". Wiseman records seven handpainted essays (see table 50, page 196) including one other 2d essay in green dated 6. Aug 84, but not this essay. Small tear at right edge and light crease well away from the essay, the painted design with central pin hole and a few small pin scrapes at the base, otherwise fine. An important and unique essay, superbly hand-painted. S.G. £8,500. Photo on Back Cover. £3,000-3,500

The two complete pieces endorsed "Sept 27 30 leads". Essays and Essay Die Proofs of dummy stamps in various monocolour and bicolour designs were submitted to the 1884 Stamp Committee, some being listed by Wiseman (page 193 and page 196, table 50). The two 4d proofs are listed by Wiseman as item F9f, with the note "F9f was in the De La Rue archives attached to a piece which also had Die Proofs of the 2d and 3d dummy stamps corner letters HB and all heads including one large one on solid background. The last (head die) was never used for British stamps. F9f was not offered at any De La Rue archive sale, nor has it been seen at any other sale to date. It is an important artefact". A unique archival piece, the 2d proof in the design of the hand-painted essay offered in the previous lot, the 4d proofs amongst the first designs produced for a bicoloured stamp. (4 Proofs on two pieces). Photo on Back Cover. £6,000-7,000

2d Rejected Duty Die

478
2d Green and scarlet, the duty die with a speckled engine-turned background, full original gum, superb and exceptionally rare. 2d Stamps were printed with the duty die having lined, solid and speckled (engine-turned) backgrounds, the former being adopted after various trials, with the speckled background being almost immediately rejected and virtually all the printed stamps destroyed. Wiseman describes the experiments (pages 309-310) and states "only the tablet with solid colour was involved in the relevant trials, formal examples of the trials with the engine turned tablet were never sent to Purcell and it is believed that this is why the engine turned essays are so much rarer than the solid colour ones. No engine turned example exists in the Royal Collection or in the Phillips Collection - nor indeed in the N.P.M at all". S.G. list both the solid and speckled duty plate 2d at the same price (£12,500) despite the fact that the speckled duty plate stamp is much rarer. One of the rarest of all "Jubilee" issue stamps. Wiseman FFa-4. S.G. £12,500. Photo on Back Cover. £7,000-8,000
