Click to view full image... Wreck Mail - "Port Maria". 1772 (Oct 31) Entire letter to London "By the Port Maria, Capt. Atkins" with "DOVER / SHIP LRE" and a "17/FE" Bishop Mark, with a copy of a contemporary report from the 19th Feb. 1773 Lloyds List - "The "Port Maria", Atkins, from Jamaica to London, lost her rudder at sea, and was otherwise so leaky, that the captain and crew were obliged to leave her in Lat. 49, Long. 17-36, on the 30th Jan. and got on board the "Woodbridge", Capt. Thomas who is arrived from Virginia". A remarkable cover from a ship abandoned at sea and transferred enroute to another ship. The earliest recorded wreck cover, four years earlier than the first item listed by Hoggarth and Gwynn in "Maritime Disaster Mail". A remarkable and important item. Photo on Page 111. £2,000-2,500

This design was never adopted for East Africa, and the KGV stamps continued to be inscribed East Africa and Uganda Protectorates until 1922.
