  USA. 1933 (July 8) Cover flown in the New York to Los Angeles air race by the winning pilot Roscoe Turner, who set a new U.S transcontinental time record; and a 1934 (Sep. 17) cover flown by Turner in the Cleveland to New York Bendix Trophy air race, both pilot signed. Also a WW2 propaganda leaflet dropped by the R.A.F over France showing a B17 Flying Fortress, and two airgraphs, one an illustrated Christmas type from the Royal Navy, Eastern Mediterranean.   1936 (Mar 26) Portugal to Mozambique flight by the Portuguese army under Major A. Pinto da Cunha, cover franked Chad 10c, 40c flown from Fort Lamy to Niamey in Niger with arrival backstamp (Mar 29), the two stamps tied by the Fort Lamy c.d.s and two line "TRANSPORTE EXCEPTIONNELLEMENT / PAR AVION". Handstamped "Major CUNHA / Escadrille Portugaise" and boxed "FORT-LAMY / Centre de Tourisme / CHASSES / aux / LIONS", numbered "10". Fine and scarce, just 16 covers carried on this leg of the flight. £100-120

  Ireland - Battle of Aughrim. 1691 (Jun 15) Entire letter from Thomas Moore in Dublin to his brother in London charged 3d, a fine "IV/22" Bishop Mark on the reverse, the letter describing the Battle of Aughrim which ended the war between the English protestant forces of William III and the Irish Jacobite forces supported by the French who wanted the Catholic James as King in Ireland. The letter includes "On Sunday the 12 instant our army march'd from Ballynasloe and came to the Irish army, who were drawn up in Battle, our left charged their right which consisted of their Regt of Horse Guards, and the Ld. Galways Regt of Horse and in intervals were posted platoons of Foot whom we entirely routed, the Regt of Guards being almost cut to pieces, on which the centre run so that we fell in with them and killed between 5 and 6000 on the place and took 500 prisoners, among whom is Major Gen'll John Hamilton, Major Gen'll Dorington, Coll Butler, Lord Bofine, Lord Bellew, Lord Galway (who since died of his wounds) with several Colonels, Lt. Cols and Captains.". Vertical file fold and minor soiling, otherwise fine, an exceptional letter from the Irish Wars of 1689-91. £300-350

  Scotland - Jacobite Rebellion. 1746 (June 26) Entire letter to "Dr Joshua Pilot of Capt. Bateman's Regt with the army, North Britain", charged 6d, a Bishop Mark on the reverse. Bateman's Regt. participated in the Battle of Culloden in April, and were part of the British forces then searching for Bonnie Prince Charlie and other Jacobite supporters. £150-200

  Seven Years War - P.O.W Mail. 1759 (Jan 7) Entire letter written in French (signed "DeXXX") from Chippenham, to "Monsieur at the Pelican Inn, Monsieur De Bellof, Prisonnier sur la parole at Bristol", the reverse with manuscript "Exd" (Examined) and initials, handstamped "CHIPPEN / HAM", staining to part of the address panel and reverse with a piece missing from the upper flap, nevertheless a scarce censored letter to a P.O.W on parole. £100-120

  Malta. 1809 (June 1st) Entire letter from Capt. William Hoste to his parents in England, headed "getting under way from Lissa", forwarding "the bulletin giving an account of the victory" - this bulletin then follows, written in another neat hand, headed from Agrani, 29th May. It describes the Battle of Aspern-Essling when the French were defeated attempting to cross the Danube, and their earlier surrender of Vienna. A final footnote written from Dan Prince at Malta states that this letter was left with him for posting by Capt. Hoste who had to sail for the Adriatic; he hoped to post it in London but has been detained in Malta. A fine letter with good content from William Hoste, who served under Nelson at several battles and destroyed over 250 enemy vessels in the Adriatic. In 1811 he defeated a greatly superior squadron at Lissa and took many prizes, but was severely wounded; he was created a Baronet in 1814. With a fine oval "SHIP-LETTER / (crown) / DOVER", apparently fumigated, carried to England with the Hind frigate and fleet which left Malta at the end of June. £250-300

  Ireland. 1813 (Aug 5) Entire letter from a sailor on a ship in Cove Harbour, sent to Manchester with a "COVE / 110" handstamp, contents include "the Jalour sloop of war made the signal for convoy to Spain and Portugal and yesterday she had orders to put to sea in pursuit of an American Privateer of 20 guns that had chased a gun brig into Waterford a day or two before", and news of other naval vessels and troop convoys. An interesting reference to the war with the USA, the US ship possibly the "Argus" which was captured on August 14th. £100-120

  Java - British Occupation. 1814 (Jan 11) Entire letter from Ivenholm (Scotland?) addressed to "Ensign Wm. Pate Hunter, 78th Regt., Java", hand carried, tape stains at lower edge, otherwise fine and scarce. Java was captured by the British in 1811 and returned to the Dutch in 1816. £100-120

Waterloo Subscription. 1816 Printed letters sent free of postage within Germany, both with Hannover postmarks, the first printed in German asks for the Waterloo Committee in London to be advised of any war widows with children or orphans as a result of their fathers having been killed in the Waterloo campaign or having died as a result of that battle. The second with the address panel headed "On the business of the WATERLOO SUBSCRIPTION", the contents in English asking the addressee to present themselves to a Magistrate or Minister and get them to fill up a form to be sent to the Waterloo Subscription Office in London. Also a news cutting with details of money given to the Waterloo Subscription. (3). Photo on Page 56. £550-650

  1836 Entire letter to "Sir Wm Bennett, Physician General, Admiralty" from an Assistant Surgeon on H.M.S "Tribune" in the Gulf of Smyrna, requesting promotion to surgeon and enclosing copies of testimonies from other surgeons. Hand carried but unusually disinfected with a disinfection cachet of Semlin on the reverse. £120-150

Central horizontal fold, a little staining and a tear to upper edge, otherwise fine and complete, a rare early P.O Notice on an important postal history subject. £300-350

Ireland. 1812 Printed East Kent Regiment of Militia certificate, stating that John Beavas enrolled in the regiment on 1st Jan. 1793 and is now serving as a volunteer, posted from Athlone to his wife in Essex prepaid at the 1d concession rate, signed "John Beavas, E. Kent Militia" and countersigned. Handstamped "ATHLONE / 60" with a good Dublin Mermaid Paid datestamp, London Paid datestamp, and red "RETURND - FROM / COLCHESTER". A little minor soiling and some splitting at the folds, a very scarce 1d rate letter from Sussex to the British army of occupation in France. £220-260

Launceston. 1807 (Mar 21) Entire letter from Rochefort to Naval Officer Adolphe Chassiron (who was captured on the Frigate "La Minerve"), a P.O.W at Launceston, probably sent within another letter to the Commissioner of the French Navy who has then forwarded it to the Transport Office. Handstamped on the reverse with the red cachet "MARINE ET COLONIES. IIIE ARRONDISSEMENT / (MORLAIX)" with the French eagle, probably indicating that the letter had been censored, with oval "TRANSPORT OFFICE / (crown) / G.R / PRISONERS OF WAR" on the front, no postage rate shown. Stapleton. 1812 (Aug 10) Entire letter from a French P.O.W Michel Devente, "Soldat au 20e Regiment de Ligne" at the Depot at Stapleton near Bristol, addressed to his father in France, endorsed "not paid" in red ink and charged "8". The letter tells of his capture in Spain and incarceration at Stapleton since December, and advises sending a reply within an outer envelope addressed to the Commissioner of Marine at Morlaix, Finistere, which would only have to be paid to Morlaix.   1813 (Mar 9) Entire letter from William Clark, P.O.W at the Chateau of Sedan, to England with oval "TRANSPORT OFFICE / (crown) / G.R / PRISONERS OF WAR" and a London backstamp, charged 11d. Clark advised that letters addressed to him as an English P.O.W at Sedan should then be enclosed within another letter and sent to the Honourable Transport Board in London, who will forward them.   1854 (Oct 3) Stampless cover to England charged 3d, backstamped upon arrival, the enclosed letter from Balaclava written by Lt. Clement Heneage of 8th Hussars describes the battlefield at Alma and a cavalry skirmish three days later. Heneage was present at the Battle of Alma on Sept. 21st and was a survivor of the Charge of the Light Brigade on October 25th. He was also present at Inkerman, the siege of Sebastopol and the expedition to Kertch, and won the Victoria Cross during the Indian Mutiny in 1858. £150-200

  1854-55 Covers to the Crimea bearing 1d red strips of three, from Teignmouth to "Captain R. Portal, 4th Light Dragoons" with a letter from his future wife enclosed; Bridgewater to "Lieut. W. Cecil de Vere, R.N, H.M.S Albion, Black Sea Fleet, Constantinople"; or London to "Capt. Charles E. Mannfield, A.D.C, care of Lieut. Genl. Sir Colin Campbell K.C.B". Capt. Portal was A.D.C to Lord George Paget and survived the Charge of the Light Brigade, in which his horse was shot; he published his "Letter from the Crimea" in 1856. (3). £150-200

  1855 Entire letter and a cover from the Crimea to Ireland both with three 1d reds cancelled in London, the entire letter written from "Camp before Sebastopol, Left Siege Train, Royal Artillery", charged a further 3d upon arrival. The cover with a green "POST - OFFICE / BRITISH - ARMY" datestamp, endorsed "XCIII before Sebastopol", the 93rd formed the 'Thin Red Line' at the Battle of Balaclava. (2). £150-200

Anderson was one of six female nurses who arrived at Therapea in the charge of Mrs Elize Mackenzie earlier in January. Mail to nurses in the Crimea is scarce. Photo on Page 59. £100-150

  Diyatalawa. 1901 Cover from Pretoria to D. Forster, a P.O.W at Tin Town, Ladysmith, with violet boxed "PASSED / S.O.P. NATAL / CENSOR / P. of W.", five different Diyatalawa censor cachets subsequently applied by favour prior to Forster leaving Ceylon. The censors comprise double ring serif type for E.J.B, and san-serif types for A.C, A.D.R, T.M.B and H.O.C.-C, this last type only known used on mail in June and July 1902, rare even applied by favour. Vertical fold and a few small edge faults but an interesting souvenir cover, illustrated on page 3.5 of 'Ceylon P.O.W Mail' by R. Stroud. £200-250

Diyatalawa. 1901-02 Registered covers (2) and an address label from a parcel all to South Africa franked 15c, 18c or 20c, handstamped with the red fancy framed large size "REGISTERED" or similar smaller size handstamp (2), all also with boxed "R", Diyatalawa cancels and censor cachets. The large size handstamp rather smudged and the cover a little stained, the smaller size handstamps both fine. These Registered handstamps were apparently applied by the camp Postmaster John F. Faure; very few examples of either type are known, and the smaller type was not recorded by Stroud. (3). Photo on Page 59. £350-450

  Diyatalawa - Censor Seals. 1900 Covers from South Africa to Diyatalawa all censored upon arrival with the white "V.R. / Opened Under Martial Law" seal (2, Stroud type 9, only recorded Nov/Dec 1900) or the pink seal "V. (crown) R / OPENED UNDER MARTIAL LAW" with imprint "Boer Camp 1." (Stroud type 22var., only two examples recorded, for 6/7 Feb), this cover also backstamped on Feb. 7. Some cover faults but the seals largely fine and rare, the last cover a little stained. (3). £180-240

Diyatalawa/India - Trichinopoly. 1901 Picture postcard written and signed by T.L Thorne, censor at the Trichinopoly P.O.W Camp, sent to "Mr Baumann, Censor Prisoners of War, Diyatalawa Ceylon", with India 1a tied by "BOER CAMP / TRICHINOPOLY" c.d.s, violet boxed "EXAMINED / T.L THORNE / Censor / Boer Camp, Trichinopoly" and oval "PASSED CENSOR P.O.W / E.J.B / DIYATALAWA".
