Post"), boxed "Kendal / Py Post" in red (with No. 1) or blue (3, with No. 1, No. 4 of Sedbergh or straight line "HAWKSHEAD"); and unframed script type "Hawkshead / Penny Post" in blue with Ambleside datestamp, "Dent / Penny Post" with Kendal datestamps (2), blue "Ambleside / Penny Post", "Penny Bridge / Penny Post" with a Milnthorpe datestamp, or "Newton / Penny Post" on an entire letter from Jamaica. A good lot, the Ambleside letter enclosing printed terms for Rugby School with a letter from Mary Arnold, wife of the famous headmaster Dr. Arnold. (15). £300-350

1633 (July 6) Entire letter from Richard Hughes at Skipton Castle addressed "to my most loving sonne Mr Humfrey Hughes there dd at Gwerkles neere Mr W. Salisburyes House at Rugge". Hughes asks his son to write and visit, and instructs him to pay the messenger of the letter. Skipton Castle was the last Royalist stronghold during the Civil War, surrendering after a long siege in December 1645, Richard Hughes being the Steward of the castle at the time.
