Click to view full image... 1914 (Aug 24) "Australia's First Aerial Mail, Melbourne to Sydney" special picture postcard depicting the aviator Wizard Stone and organiser P.V Ryan, sent to Burwood with a 1d Kangaroo cancelled at Sydney. The flight was abandoned after the aircraft was damaged in transit and then crashed on June 1st; the mail was carried by rail to Sydney where it was posted. Fine and scarce. AAMC 2, $800. Harry Butler special flight postcard, flown from Adelaide to Minlaton with KGV 1½d cancelled upon arrival, a Clarence Park c.d.s applied upon redirection, the card numbered "635", with printed message and signature. Harry Butler special flight postcard, flown from Adelaide to Minlaton with KGV 1½d cancelled upon arrival, with the typed message "with the compliments of the International Harvester Company, 18/20 North Terrace, City, per first Aerial Mail Service 4 8 1919". These cards were used by at least five companies for advertising purposes, but the International Harvester Co. is not amongst the advertisers recorded in the Australian Air Mail Catalogue. Harry Butler special flight postcard flown from Minlaton to Adelaide with KGV 1½d cancelled upon arrival, an Unley c.d.s applied upon redirection, the message reading "It was splendid to see Captain Butler handle his monoplane. He looped the loop, time after time, rolled the machine, spiral dive &c all with graceful movement". Fine and scarce, only about 200 cards carried on this return flight to Adelaide. AAMC 22a, $750. Cobham" and numbered "6" with departure and arrival dates shown in his handwriting. Also a 1927 (Jan 3) typed letter signed by Cobham stating the cover is genuine and one of only nine covers carried on this flight; also that Cobham is the only person to have flown from Melbourne to London. Click to view full image... 1913 (July/Aug) "Flying Post - Ghent Exhibition" postcards used to France with 5c pair or 10c cancelled at Blankenberghe, with the violet cachets "POSTE AERIENNE / Aeroplanes / de BROUCKERE / DEPERDOSIN / EXPOSITION DE GAND" and "POST AERIENNE / 1913 BLANKENBERGHE", the first card cancelled July 29 (arrival c.d.s of July 31) with handwritten message on the plain reverse (pilot signed?), the second with a picture of an aeroplane and cancel of August 21 (arrival c.d.s of Aug. 23). The first card a little creased but otherwise fine, the second with a closed tear. Also a used postcard of the 1909 Antwerp aviation week, a WW1 Belgian forces envelope to England possibly flown over the "King Albert" Line, and two postcards of the 1919 Amsterdam Aero Exhibition, one signed by the crew and passengers from the August 24th demonstration flight over Amsterdam. Kramer with watches depicted on the reverse, addressed to "His Excellency Lewa Crawford Pacha, The Palace, Khartoum" with the large violet cachet "POSTE AERIENNE / L.N.A / MARC POURPE / 1913-14 / CAIRE-KHARTOUM". The enclosed letter from Kramer sends Christmas greetings, and includes "These wishes sent through Mr Marc Pourpe's Aerial Post, in the first flight in aeroplane from Cairo to Khartoum". Marc Pourpe flew from Cairo on 4th January 1914 arriving at Khartoum on the 12th after stops at Menshah, Luxor, Wadi Halfa and Abu Hamed. Approximately ten stampless covers carried on this flight for addressees in Sudan. Click to view full image... 1914 (Jan 19) Ligue Nationale Aerrienne cover addressed in Pourpe's handwriting to the President of L.N.A (who sponsored the flight) in Cairo, carried on the return flight from Khartoum to Cairo, and flown as far as Abu Hamed, the second stop reached two days after Pourpe left Khartoum. Franked by Sudan 1m, 3m and 4m stamps tied by "ABU HAMED" c.d.s (Jan 21), backstamped Shellal-Halfa T.P.O No. 2, Halfa-Khartoum T.P.O No. 1 (both Jan 23) and Cairo (Jan 26). Twice handstamped with circular cachet "POSTE AERIENNE / L.N.A / MARC POURPE / 1913-14 / CAIRE-KHARTOUM", applied in blue on the front of the cover and in violet on the reverse.   1914 (Jan 17) Four page letter from Khartoum, written in French and signed by Marc Pourpe, to his Aunt Margot. The letter includes "On Monday morning I leave for Cairo from this delicious hell which is Khartoum, hell because of its heat, and delicious because of the affability and the cordial hospitality of the people who live in it. My flight was fairly difficult at the beginning, but as soon as the Nile delta had been passed I cruised along at an average speed of 137 Kilometers per hour!!!... I hope that my return will not be delayed too long ..... I was received like a king in Khartoum by Lord Kitchener and the Sirdar .... of course I am going to fly as far as Suez "my home town"". An interesting and historic letter from Pourpe, written two days before his return flight from Khartoum. £250-300

Flown by R.A.F emergency air service from Alexandria to Port Said (due to civil unrest in the country) and then delivered by road to Kantara. None of the published sources make any reference to the R.A.F air service operating to Suez; however the arrival c.d.s just one day after posting at Cairo proves it must have been flown directly from Cairo to Suez. Barlow, c/o R.A.F Depot (Fairey IIID Flight), Cape Town, South Africa" and endorsed "Per Trans African Air Mail", redirected to "Fairey Aviation Works, Hayes, Middlesex, England". Bearing a South Africa 2d tied by Muizenberg c.d.s (Apr. 19), signed and endorsed "To be carried by Fairey IIID, 31104 C. Pulford, Wing Cdr o/c Cape Flight 25/2/26". A scarce cover, carried on the survey flight from Heliopolis to Cape Town and posted back to England from Muizenberg, a little worn and faded, otherwise fine. Also a typed letter (Apr 14th) from the Air Ministry Press Section with copies of two telegrams sent by Sir Samuel Hoare to Wing Cdr. Click to view full image... 1870 (Nov 8) Tiny cover (65x29mm) to London endorsed "Ballon Monte", a 30c stamp folded over the edge, datestamps of Paris Pl. de la Bourse, Bordeaux a Paris (Nov. 28) and London Paid with red boxed "PD". The address panel neatly sliced through to open the cover, otherwise fine and unusual, carried on the "Daguerre". Photo on Back Cover. £100-120

Click to view full image... 1870 (Nov 23) Ballon Monte addressed to Birmingham with a red London Paid arrival c.d.s (Dec 2) and boxed "PD", carried on the "Ville D'Orleans" which ended up in Norway. One bag was thrown from the balloon into the North Sea in an attempt to keep it in the air, and was recovered by fishermen and landed in Scotland; this letter was evidently in the recovered bag and show signs of having been damp, the stamp having washed off. The Ballon Monte has an accompanying envelope inscribed "From Paris, Received by Balloon Post during the Siege, 5 December 1870" and a cutting of 7th December 1870 from "The Birmingham Daily Gazette" which reproduces much of the content of this Ballon Monte. The remarkable letter tells of the resolve of the citizens of Paris, the large numbers of trained and armed men, the manufacture of cannon and large quantities of stored food, and declares "We will not hear of peace as long as a Prussian will be on our Alsatian or Lorraine soil, and we have the utmost confidence in the ultimate success". An exceptional Ballon Monte and contemporary newspaper report of its contents. Photo on Page 29. £500-600

Also a broadsheet issued with these souvenir reproductions, with an extract of an article from "The Times" explaining how the paper was photographically reduced, flown into Paris by pigeon and then shown enlarged on a screen using a magic lantern. Click to view full image... 1905 (July 21) "Le Matin" Pigeon Post, special picture postcard with an attached envelope "Message Par Pigeon" containing the printed message headed "A bord de l'Ariane" which was flown by pigeon on July 21, the postcard then posted from Cherbourg (July 23) to Paris bearing a perfined 15c. The pigeons were released from the ship "Ariane" anchored in the Channel off Penzance, and flew to Cherbourg. The pigeon message now hinged to the postcard, a small surface fault caused by the lifting of one of these hinges, otherwise fine and very scarce with the original flown pigeon message. No. 1" datestamp (Oct 15) and Fort de France arrival c.d.s (Oct 27). This flight carried a small quantity of mail for the West Indies, which was able to leave by boat from Bordeaux on the same day.   1918 Picture postcard with a faint pencil address, franked on the picture side by a 15c stamp and bearing a red "Par Avion" label both tied by "PARIS / AVIATION" c.d.s, with a St. Nazaire arrival c.d.s and a red official "Aeronautique Civile" cachet, the reverse numbered "32" and signed. Carried on the first flight of the first commercial French air service operated by the French Air Force, mainly used for carrying US forces mail, fine and scarce.   1922 (Mar 14) O.H.M.S Covers sent from Paris to the Air Ministry in London to test the speed of air mail and surface mail, one franked 75c and inscribed "Par Avion" with an air mail vignette applied, numbered 19; the other franked 50c and sent by ordinary mail, numbered 20. Both have the corresponding slips showing the date and times of posting and arrival; the air mail letter arrived in 21hrs 45mins against 24hrs 30mins for the ordinary letter. An unusual pair. Two differing cards were produced for this flight and three bags of mail were carried and dropped over different parts of Kent; fewer than ten cards believed to exist from all three postings and both card types. The original flight from Manchester was abandoned when the balloon flew into a tree; the cards were carried a week later (on Sept. 5th) on a successful flight from Alexandria Palace in North London to Ongar. 3,200 Postcards were dropped at 16 points en route. Click to view full image... 1905 (July 12) Beckenham Flower Show postcard with the printed message "Despatched from the clouds, by Balloon Post, from the Beckenham Flower Show, Wed., July 12, 1905", addressed to Germany with KEVII 1d cancelled at Gravesend (July 12), an arrival datestamp of Preetz (July 14). The balloon flew from Beckenham to Romford; cards were dropped at Chislehurst and Gravesend. A fine and very rare card, very few recorded, almost certainly unique to an overseas address.   1907 (Oct 12) Daily Graphic Balloon Postcard flown from Crystal Palace to Sweden, endorsed on the front "Posted by Mr A.V Miclsow, Mellerud, Sweden", the reverse with a "MELLERUD" c.d.s (Dec 9) and boxed "T", a "2d / FB" charge mark applied in the London Foreign Branch and a London W arrival c.d.s (Dec 12). The balloon crash-landed at Mellerud on October 14th scattering cards over a wide area; it then took off again without the aeronauts, and flew another 30 miles to Tosse, with further cards still on board. A fine card, posted nearly two months after the cards were dropped at Mellerud. £150-180

Durrant", addressed to "Whitfield King & Co, Advertising Agents, Ipswich", unusually franked by a G.B ½d. With a "MELLERUD" c.d.s (Nov 2), boxed "T" and "1½d / F.B" charge mark of the London Foreign Branch (2d unpaid charge less the ½d G.B stamp), Ipswich arrival c.d.s (Nov 5). The addressees were also well known stamp dealers. Very few of these Advertising Manager cards are recorded. Photo on Page 33. £300-350
