Click to view full image...Click to view full image... 1921-22 Shackleton-Rowett Expedition. 1921 (Sep 7) Typed letter on Shackleton's personal notepaper, sent to Brigadier General F.H Williamson at the General Post Office, boldly signed E.H Shackleton. The letter refers to the proposed overprinted stamps for his forthcoming Antarctic Expedition, and reads "As discussed this morning I enclose the drawings for the three principal stamps: Tristan da Cunha, Gough island and Enderby Land. Should Tristan have a Post office of its own I of course will not use the stamp. Gough Island and Enderby Land are our two other main stations. I made drawings of the three to the exact size which is a little smaller than a penny stamp and also a drawing of date stamp. I hope all this will not give you too much trouble. I do not know whether these stamps can be made in metal or if they must be rubber. If the latter I shall have to keep them in a fairly warm place. I understand also that you make arrangements for me officially as Postmaster and supply a credit amount of stamps to the value of £100. I of course shall keep accurate books and make the paper returns". The three drawings of proposed overprints, drawn by Shackleton on card, accompany the letter. The unadopted essays a little creased otherwise fine; an important and unique Shackleton letter and essay group. (2). Photo on Pages 85 & 86. £2,800-3,500

Click to view full image... 1921-22 Shackleton-Rowett Expedition. 1921 (Sep 8) Piece bearing G.B KGV 10d blue cancelled by the "S-R ANTARCTIC / EXPEDITION 1921" c.d.s and boxed "ENDERBY / LAND", applied on the day these handstamps were received from the G.P.O in London prior to the departure of the expedition. The expedition never reached Enderby Land, and this handstamp therefore only exists on a few pieces prepared on this day. The expedition was not supplied with any 10d stamps, and the Expedition c.d.s used on this value is probably unique. An exceptional piece, with 2015 Ceremuga certificate. Photo on Page 85. £750-900

Tasmania - Convicts Letter. 1833 (May 26) and 1855 (Nov 25) Entire letters from Edward Hardy, the first from Newgate Prison to a solicitor in Cartmel asking for five pounds as he has been sentenced to transportation for seven years and needs money on the voyage; the second written from Impression Bay in Tasmania also to Cartmel, signed Ed B.W Hardy, "Westmorland", the address panel headed "Convict Letter", endorsed "Exd AJV" and signed by I. Kerr. Handstamped red "FREE / 30 NO 30 / 1855" and "GENERAL POST OFFICE / HOBART-TOWN / 30 NO 30 / 1855" datestamps with a "6d" charge mark of Liverpool, backstamped "AUSTRALIAN / LIVERPOOL / PACKET" (Mar 26) and at Lancaster and Kendal. Hardy was convicted in 1833 of obtaining money under false pretences and sentenced to seven years transportation to Bermuda, serving five years on the "Coromandel" and "Antelope" hulks. In 1841 he was again sentenced to seven years transportation to Tasmania for fraud, sailing there on the "Westmorland" convict ship from Southend. In 1849 he was again sentenced to transportation to Tasmania for life for horse stealing. This was commuted in 1860, but in 1867 he received a ten year prison sentence for sheep stealing, and died in 1869 at Port Arthur. With copies of Hardy's prison and court records. An interesting pair, the Tasmania letter extremely rare with the correct "Convict Letter" heading and examiners initials, ex Tinsley. (2). Photo on Page 81 £2,200-2,600

The BSIP commissioner C.M. Woodford proposed a stamp issue for the Protectorate in 1906, and had these photographic essays produced by the Sydney firm of W.E Smith & Co whilst in the city on BSIP business; however he rejected these designs and drew the Large Canoe design himself, used for the first stamps issued in 1907 and printed by W.E Smith in Sydney. These three essays were supposedly obtained from Woodford by a member of his staff. The first examples of these essays we have seen, illustrated on page 29 of "British Solomon Islands" by H. Gisburn.
