The "Fly" was about to leave for Australia on the four year Cambridge Anthropological Expedition; Melville served on the expedition as an artist and hydrographer, and conducted the first hydrographical survey of the North East Coast of Australia. He became a professional artist specialising in landscapes and animals, and both he and Egley exhibited at the Royal Academy. A historical letter, attractively illustrated with sketches of the "Fly", Queen Victoria, crew mates, and of the animals, birds, fish and landscapes which he hopes to see in Australia. £200-250

The covers comprising blank type registration labels with undated single ring datestamps of St. Minver (2) or St. Tudy or violet straight line "CAMELFORD", 1883 oval framed "R" of Penzance strangely obliterated by "609" numerals, an unusual 1907 circular framed "R" of Newlyn, 1881 ½d + 2d printed matter rate from Truro with unusual red "REGISTERED" label, and 1884 Truro cover with ½d + 1d + 2d. Redruth. 1586 (Dec 8) Entire letter addressed "To the right worshipfull Peter Edgecombe Esqr, geve these" with the filing endorsement below "The wytnesses touchynge layte", the contents comprising a series of witness statements about the addressees land which is in dispute, some in the Parish of Stithiens near Redruth. Looe. 1592 (July 22) Entire letter from John Comminge at Looe, written and addressed in English, "To his good friend Mr Barnard who lives at Mr Philypo Coursyinis house on gratyos strett in London", offering to load a ship or two with pilchards, hake and conger. The famous Corsini correspondence only contained five letters from Cornwall, this single letter from Looe and four others from Fowey, Helford or Truro. A fine and rare Elizabethan period letter.
