Click to view full image... 1796 (Jan 8) Entire letter from Canton, addressed to Scotland endorsed "Per Sophia Magdalena Q.D.C" with a "DOVER / SHIP LRE", charged 2/10. Written by the Scottish merchant James Crichton, who says he is despatching this letter on a Swedish Indiaman which leaves for Europe; also the Cirencester merchantman arrived on December 28th after a voyage of nearly six months and brought Crichton a letter from his mother, the first news received for two years. He records letters sent by various ships, some in the first fleet to England, since his arrival in China a year ago from St. Helena, and tells of his removal to the summer residence in the Portuguese settlement of Macao from May to October. Click to view full image... 1798 (Dec 19) Entire letter from James Crichton in Canton, to his brother in Scotland, endorsed "p.favor Capt. Stuart, Bernstroff, Q.D.C", with curved "DEAL / SHIP LRE". Crichton tells of this letter going with the despatches for Europe on the Danish ship "Bernstroff", he received his sisters and brothers letters of 15th April a few days ago, but has now only received 3 letters in 3 years, "the combined fleets of France & Spain lie in wait at Manila to intercept our homeward fleet of Indiamen that sail next month". Click to view full image... 1802 (Feb 20) Entire letter from James Crichton in Canton to his sister in Scotland, with oval "Ship Letter / (crown) / DOVER", charged 1/4. He received her letter of December 1800 by the direct ships which arrived at Whampoa last month, and tells her to write in future every month, sending the letters under cover to his London agents Messrs Arthur & Larken, who will despatch them by the first ships leaving for China. He concludes "I write this scrawl in a chop boat to send by a Danish Indiaman just leaving this port - p. Princess of Denmark Q.D.C". Also two other 1802 letters without address panels, both from Canton, dated 15 January, telling of the regular arrival of Indiamen and their cargos, war news from Egypt where the French have surrendered at Cairo and Alexandria is besieged, and the death of Lord Abercrombie; or dated March 28th, with news of the arrival of the Indiamen fleet at Macao Roads and an armed force, sent to take Macao in order to prevent its capture by the French.   1931 Long registered cover with "SINO-SWEDISH SINKIANG EXPEDITION / SVEN HEDIN, LEADER" printed in the corner, sent by expedition member Nils Ambolt to his wife in Sweden, franked by eight 1924 10c Sinkiang stamps, the reverse endorsed "Recue an bureau de poste a Moscou en etat endammager" with two wax seals. Sven Hedin led an archaeological and scientific Sino-Swedish expedition to Mongolia and Northern China from 1927 until 1935. A few edge tears, mainly at the right, but an interesting and historic cover from this expedition, which the Chinese honoured with a special stamp issue in 1932. £150-180

  1881 (Mar 6) 1d Postcard with Cyprus overprint cancelled by Larnaca c.d.s, addressed to Whitfield King & Co., the message asking them for their buying price for 100 examples of used ½d or 1d Cyprus stamps. The message a little water affected causing it to faintly show through to the front, otherwise fine, a scarce card used. Also overprint issue ½d, 1d, 1½d cards and 1d wrapper unused, and cut-outs of the first ½d postcard and 1d wrapper stamps both cancelled "942". (7). £120-150
