Penrise/Chard. 1652 (Dec 8) Entire letter from Chard, Somerset, addressed "To the Woll Oliver Saule Esq att his house att Penrise in Cornwall by the way of Plymouth this dd Cornwall" with "post payd" added in a second hand. Carried on the Western post road to Plymouth and then on the branch road along the South Coast of Cornwall to Penryn. An early postally endorsed letter from the limited public post organised by Edmund Prideaux using the 1635 postal rates, some creasing and edge stains caused by sellotape (now removed), still very presentable and rare. Ex. David Cornelius collection, illustrated on the front cover of his 1973 book "Devon & Cornwall, A Postal Survey". Photo on Page 182. £300-350

Falmouth - Missent Mail. 1820-51 Entire letters, covers and entires, comprising 1820 entire letter from Liverpool to Barnstaple with very scarce boxed "MISSENT - TO - / FALMOUTH" (CO79, only recorded year of use); red octagonal framed "Missent to / FALMOUTH" (CO80) on 1838 free entire from Edinburgh to London or 1840 entire from Belper to Birmingham; or red "Missent to / FALMOUTH" (CO82) on 1851 cover from Hayle to Birmingham or 1850 cover from Sittingbourne to Funchal "By H.Ms Ship Linnet or first mail" (received after the "Linnet" had left Falmouth, then sent to Southampton to catch the R.M.S.P "Dee"). Click to view full image... Gunnislake. 1847 (Dec 25) Cover to Plymouth prepaid 1d in cash, with tiny "Gunnislake P.P" straight line handstamp and a Plymouth arrival backstamp. Originally found by Major W.L.J Cornelius in the 1930s and subsequently part of the David Cornelius Collection, this remains the only known example of this extraordinary handstamp, and is the only recorded Gunnislake handstamp used between 1835 (when the "No. 1" penny post mark was used) and 1852. Penryn. 1689-90 Entire letters from Tremayne or Trelowarren near Helston, both to John Morth, High Sheriff of Cornwall at Talland near Looe, both rated 2d with manuscript "Pen-rn : 2" clearly written in the same hand. Although many other letters are known to John Morth none show this Penryn endorsement; these two letters are from different places and senders but both travelled by the southern post road which began at Penryn, and the "Pen-rn 2" must therefore have been written on by the Postmaster at Penryn.
