  1923 (Nov 28) - 1926 (Dec 22) Covers from G.B to Baghdad (5) or Mosul, the first cover from Lochawe strangely franked 10½d though posted on the first day of reduced air fee of 3d + 2½d postage (total 5½d, reduced from 8½d), the others all correctly franked 5½d. Five covers with Baghdad arrival backstamps, the final cover probably flown on the final R.A.F flight (or the first Imperial Airways flight in 1927), but without any backstamp. (6). £200-250

Sent on the first air despatch from Baghdad on this day and carried on the first flight which left on the 12th, the only flight for which this 12a air fee applied. 1663 Covers carried on this first flight but very few have survived, fine and scarce.   1921 (Nov 16) Cover to England signed by a Capt. R. Wilkinson and endorsed "Aerial Mail" with "M" censor cachet to indicate it was forces mail and exempt from 3a postage, franked on the reverse by a single 1r stamp to pay the air fee. Sent on the 27 Nov. despatch from Baghdad which flew from Baghdad on the 28th, a delay of two days as the airfield was out of service, with a London arrival backstamp (Dec. 8). 1971 Covers were carried on this second flight, which was the first flight at the increased air fee of 1r; only one further flight occurred at this rate before the air fee was reduced to 6a. Backstamped at Baghdad H.O, Lower Baghdad (both Mar 13) and Magil with boxed bilingual "Please return this cover / to the Postmaster Basrah / for an official enquiry.". One corner of the flap torn away with the loss of a few letters from the boxed cachet, otherwise fine and very unusual. Flown from Cairo on the March 11 flight with the stamps uncancelled. Click to view full image... "City of Khartoum". 1935 (Dec 24/25) Covers from G.B to Basrah or Hinaidi both water damaged, one franked 6d, the other with the stamp washed off. One cover with an Iraq "Found open or damaged and officially secured" label tied by two Baghdad datestamps (Jan. 9), the other with two explanatory labels applied at Basra, reading "Saved from "City of / Khartoom" / Received at Basrah in / soaked condition.". The "City of Khartoum" crashed into Alexandria harbour on December 31st killing three crew and nine passengers; the mail was recovered one week later. Fine and scarce, the Basrah label not recorded by Nierinck. (2). Photo on Page 21. £200-250

  "Scipio"/"Calpurnia". 1936 (Aug 20) Registered cover from Baghdad Al Samawal to Scotland, the stamps washed off, handstamped "DAMAGED BY / SEA WATER", from the "Scipio" which crashed and sank when landing at Mirabella Bay on August 22nd, killing two people; and a 1938 (Nov 24) registered cover from Manchester to Baghdad franked 6d with Dec. 1st arrival backstamp, carried on the "Calpurnia" which was wrecked when landing in a storm on Lake Ramadi on Nov. 27th. Of 90 mail bags on board just three contained mail for Iraq. (2). £100-120

  "Calpurnia". 1938 (Nov 23) Covers from GB to New Zealand, one franked 6d, the other severely water damaged with the stamp washed off, handstamped violet "RECEIVED IN DAMAGED CONDITION / EX FLYING BOAT CALPURNIA" or the larger three line "RECEIVED IN / DAMAGED CONDITION / ex CALPURNIA". The "Calpurnia" crashed at Lake Ramadi in Iraq, killing Capt. Attwood. (2). £100-150

Air Letters & Douglas Gumbley Papers

  A scrap album, photos and papers kept by Douglas Gumbley who became Inspector-General of Posts & Telegraphs and Director of Civil Aviation in Iraq (and later in Palestine); he was instrumental in promoting both the aerial and overland services across Iraq, and invented the world's first air mail lettercard, issued by Iraq in 1933. The album includes various news cuttings relevant to Gumbley, civil aviation, Iraq or Palestine; a 1924 letter from the Air Ministry concerning a meeting with Lord Thomson on the future of the Egypt and Iraq air route; photos of the new Tel-Aviv airport; and an unused 1933 Iraq 15f air letter. The papers include letters and reports concerning his pre-WW1 service with the Indian Telegraphs in the Middle East (with two 1910 covers from India to Gumbley at Jask, one with "CAMP POST OFFICE No 39" c.d.s); an interesting 1914 (Dec 2) letter with details of a battle against the Turks near Abadan, and a 'mentioned in despatches' certificate of 10 April 1917; various post-war letters and reports concerning job offers, civil aviation, a greetings postcard from Sefton Brancker to Gumbley in Iraq in 1928, etc. Also about 35 original photos including Gumbley as a child with his father and brother, a WW1 portrait in army uniform and a fine group photo with the Officers and staff of Telegraphs force "D" in Mesopotamia in 1915, group photo with his staff taken in Baghdad (2), various photos taken in Iraq or Palestine with KLM or Imperial Airways planes, plane crashes, etc. An interesting archive relating to this important person. £300-350
