Orange Free State

1900 V.R.I Overprints, the magnificent reference collection, incorporating the "Buckley" collection, written up in three albums, arranged by setting with the different printings for each value shown within each of the five settings. Most printings are represented by complete panes or panes fully or partially reconstructed from large blocks, the majority mint but a few used, with some sheets or half sheets; positions of constant varieties are noted on the album pages including various missing stop varieties. The collection includes first setting 1/2d first printing blocks of 18 and 23 (the only recorded pane in the Royal Collection), second printing with blocks of 38 and 48, third printing pane and interpanneau block of 108 (both very rare); 1d first printing varieties with "I" omitted (6, two used) and second printing pane of 60; 2 1/2d pane; 3d pane and a single with double overprint; 4d block of 36; 6d blue pane: 1/- large part reconstructed pane. Second settings include 1/2d sheet, panes (3) and other blocks from the first and second states; 1d half sheet and part pane; 2d pane and various smaller blocks; 3d panes (2) and block of 38; 4d pane; 6d blue pane; 1/- partial reconstruction of 44 stamps. Third settings comprising 1/2d panes (2, first and second state) and half sheet (third state); 1d panes (3, first, second and third state); 2d panes (3, first, second and third states) and a sheet (first/second states); 3d first state reconstructed pane and second state half sheet; 6d blue panes (2, first and second state) and blocks; 1/- lower right pane (probably unique) and blocks; 5/- blocks of 12 and 18; and fourth settings comprising 1/2d sheets (2, second and third printing), panes of sixty (9, various states and printings, one stamp with surface damage resulting in the "V" appearing as an offset on the reverse) and a large part sheet (fourth printing); 1d panes (4, one used, first, fourth and fifth printings) and a sheet (fourth printing). Fifth settings comprise 1d sheets (2), half sheets (2), panes (10) and other blocks showing first to fifth printings with various states, and varieties with a rare half sheet showing variety thick "V" and no stops after "R" and "I" (probably unique in a pane); 2d panes (2, first and second states), blocks and a single with value partly omitted; 3d upper left pane (believed to be one of only two recorded panes, with most stamps from this printing being overprinted "B.D" for Bank Draft) and smaller blocks and pairs. Also photographs of various other panes throughout. A superb reference lot, probably the most complete study of these overprint types to have been formed. (1,000s). £3,000-4,000

Postal Fiscals/Revenues. 1877 6d Revenue with the value "ZES PENCE" printed twice, the impression at the top of the stamp inverted, fiscally used with manuscript cancellation. These stamps were authorised for postal use in 1882 and are therefore listed by Stanley Gibbons, who mention this remarkable stamp as a footnote to the issue. The value was printed in a second operation in half sheets of sixty, and it is highly probable that just one half sheet of sixty was printed with this error. This stamp remains the sole example to have been discovered to date. An exceptional and unique variety, with R.P.S Certificate (1994). Photo on Back Cover. £2,500-3,000
