1933 Picture postcard of Ullswater with KGV 1d tied by Saltburn-by-the-Sea c.d.s., with fine circular cachet "THE CRUISE OF / "THE NORTHERN BELLE" / 28 JUN / LNER / 1933". The first year of use of this scarce cachet, applied to mail posted on the train during its two week holiday 'cruise' around Britain; the cachet was used on similar 'cruises' each summer from 1933 until 1939. Royalty

The royal collection of Mrs Alice Bruce (1885-1960) who was appointed Housekeeper at Windsor Castle in 1939 and was personally known to members of the Royal Family, who corresponded with her until her death in 1960. Autograph letters from Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth, Princes Elizabeth and later as Queen, Princess Margaret and The Duchess of Kent, together with signed photographs form the core of the collection, subsequently expanded by the nephew of Mrs Bruce to encompass Royal Household postmarks, covers, postcards and ephemera.

Queen Mary (1867-1953)

Evacuated to Badminton House, Gloucestershire, for the duration of WWII, from where Queen Mary's mail was sent via Bristol.

1942 (July) Registered cover with red "Bristol Paid" c.d.s and Badminton single ring c.d.s on reverse, addressed and initialled "MR" by Queen Mary; with autograph note to Mrs Bruce at Windsor Castle, "I hope to go to the christening of the Duke of Kent's baby on Aug 4th (but perhaps this is hush hush)....", and enquiring after an inventory of Queen Victoria's fans; with a further note dated 1944 regarding another catalogue of "Queen Victoria's fans and lace".
