1866 Cover with "Chirk Castle, Chirk" printed on the flap, well painted in watercolour with a couple and their daughter in front of a wall bearing various notices and posters, which include a 6d stamp (faults) and the address, "Sir G.A. Larpent, Bart., 88th Regt, Cawnpore, India". Readdressed to Umballa and again to Loodhiana. The reverse bearing a further 4d stamp, both stamps cancelled "197" of Ruabon with a "CHIRK" c.d.s alongside, other backstamps including Ruabon, Bombay, Umballa, Agra and Loodhiana. 1867 (Dec 24) Cover initialled "HC" by Henry Culshaw, divided into five boxes, four superbly illustrated with watercolours of a lady, ballerinas or two knights, the fifth box bearing a cut-out 2d postal stationery stamp tied by London E.C 81 duplex. 1881 Cover with a superb watercolour illustration of two men removing an Inn sign for the "Queens Head" and replacing it with the "Parnell Arms", a boy throwing a stone at a boat of sailors being landed from a naval ship. The addressees name "Miss N.H. Martin" affixed to the inn wall and the address "The Upper Hall, Ledbury" affixed to a pole, the picture initialled "JEB". A 1d venetian red affixed to the Queens Head inn sign and another stamp on the reverse, both cancelled "O89", backstamped at Usk, Newport and Ledbury. 1888-1912 Cover all superbly illustrated by George Edwards (12) or Burgoyne Edwards (2), all postally used to various members of the Edwards family mainly in the Bristol area or Somerset, franked by QV 1d lilacs (6), KEVII 1d (5), KGV 1d Downey Head (2), also one cover from Montreal with a Canada QV 2c. Pictures include a boy holding a plan which is being torn by a dog; pretty women (7, one with a tennis racket); a jester with a monkey; men in Civil War period costume (2, one sent to Canada but returned marked "NOT CALLED FOR"); a Navy sailor looking through a telescope (sent to "No. 6 Ward, Royal N. Hospital, Haslar, Nr Gosport"); a Georgian dandy; and a forest scene at night. One cover has an enclosed letter written by George from Camden Studios which includes news of the sale of his institute picture to the Queen for thirty guineas less 20% commission. 1910 (Dec 29) Large cover (255x302mm) superbly illustrated in colour with a Napoleonic war period naval ship, most probably H.M.S Victory with Portsmouth in the background, flying flags throughout the rigging, which read "A VERY MERRY XMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR". Initialled and dated "HR 1910", addressed to "HIS ROYAL HIGHNESS THE PRINCE OF WALES, YORK COTTAGE, SANDRINGHAM", the upper corners each with a KEVII 1d tied by Limerick datestamps. Despite being posted in December the envelope was presumably painted prior to the Prince of Wales ascending to the throne, as King George V, in May. 1827 Printed G.P.O letter advising that a letter for the addressee is detained and will only be forwarded upon receipt of 2/7 postage, payable at the Foreign Post Office in Lombard Street, the O.H.M.S address panel with printed name of "Francis Freeling", sent free of charge to Paris with red Ministry of Finances handstamp. Turned and posted back from Paris to "Messrs Perkins & Heath, 69 Fleet St., London" with a letter to Mr Bacon asking him to release and forward the letter. £100-120

1839 Ticket printed on green card, 113x77m, - "HUSTINGS TICKET, The honour of Mr.......'s Attendance is Requested at A PUBLIC MEETING To be held in the EGYPTIAN HALL OF THE MANSION HOUSE, on Friday next, 31st of May, 1839, at Two o'clock precisely, To Petition Parliament for the adoption of Mr Rowland Hill's Plan of AN UNIFORM PENNY POSTAGE, as recommended by the Select Committee of the House of Commons. The Right Hon. THE LORD MAYOR in the Chair.", together with a printed note transmitting the enclosed ticket. Also a printed letter requesting attendance at a meeting of the "Committee for Promoting the adoption of the Report of the Select Committee of the House of Commons on Postage". A rare trio in superb condition, produced by the Mercantile Committee on Postage as part of their campaign for Penny Postage, from the set of Mercantile papers collected by George Moffatt. (3). Wiltshire / Uniform Penny Postage. 1840 (Jan 10) Entire letter from Salisbury to Clifton with very fine "SALISBURY / JA 10 / 1840" datestamp on reverse (which displays well with the upper flap opened), posted unpaid and charged 2d. Written from 'The Close' the letter contains a bill for six months board and tuition at school. Light vertical fold, otherwise fine, a good example of the first day of Penny Postage and the first day of the double rate charge on unpaid mail. Photo on Page 47. £200-250

Rowland Hill. 1844 (May 25) Three page letter written and signed by Rowland Hill from Bayswater, to a Mr Phepson expressing gratitude for contributions by his excellent friends in Birmingham to the Rowland Hill Testimonial Fund, and for Phepson's "early and steady friendship for my father & your kindness to my brothers & myself". A postscript asks Phepson to pass on his gratitude should he meet Mr Cadbury "or any of the older inhabitants of the town who were active & leading when I was a boy". Rowland Hill received a first instalment of £10,000 from his Testimonial Fund in 1845. A good Rowland Hill letter. £400-500

1889 3d Postcards, essays in red and brown with the wording headed "Union Postal Universelle" as used on most of the inland postcards issued from 1883. The 3d card was issued for use to Australia, New Zealand and Fiji, the issued card being in red, with a new heading incorporating the words "British Empire" below the royal arms and "Post Card".
