Original watercolour designs by John Nicholson for the 1981 Centenary of Royal National Mission to Fisherman 9p value depicting the rescue of survivors from the Lusitania, and 1982 150th Anniversary of the Isle of Man Steam Packet Co. mail contract 12p value depicting the paddle steamer "Mona I", both very well painted, close to the design of the issued stamps. The "Mona I" design (189x118mm) complete with the Queen's head, country name, Shipping Co. arms and value of '18p', with pencil instructions below "Enlarge ship by about 15mm - Don't forget 'Royal Mail' pennant & other flags - subdue background a bit". The issued stamp had the Shipping Co. arms altered, the value changed to 12p, with the Queen's head and Shipping Co. arms swapped over and the Queen facing to the left. The Lusitania illustration (270x180mm) lacks the wording, value or Queen's head. Two fine and attractive watercolours, both on card, each signed by John Nicolson, well framed with the issued stamp below. Nicholson (1911-88) was a well known Manx painter, a member of the Royal Institute and President of the Isle of Man Art Society; from 1958 he designed stamps, coins and banknotes for the Isle of Man Government. 1986 Europa, Protection of Nature and the Environment issue, original watercolour designs by John Nicholson for the four stamps, all close to the issued stamp designs but without any wording, values or the Queen's head, and lacking the birds, flowers, animals or insects that were later added to the designs. Each watercolour 164x113mm, on card, each signed by John Nicholson, the four attractively framed together with the issued stamps below. Charged 6d for delivery from Holland to London by the Merchant Adventurers Post, then delivered by the Merchant Strangers Post as the top letter in a bundle of 38 letters.
