| 1803 (Dec 12) Entire letter from Lt. Col. Thomas McDermott held prisoner of war in Valenciennes to General MacDonald in Paris seeking his help in getting his release, the letter charged 4 decimes with "VALENCIENNES" handstamp and a Paris arrival backstamp. McDermott and MacDonald served with the British army in Dillon's Regiment, a regiment of Irish soldiers of fortune; after their capture MacDonald changed sides and became a General in the French army. | 1811 (Oct 28) Tiny folded up letter written by Captain Robert Philips, Royal Marines, Prisoner of War at Verdun, addressed to Charles Cox in London. Smuggled out of France it was posted within another letter at Newton Abbot, charged 10d postage with "NEWTON ABBOTT" handstamp and a London (Dec 25) c.d.s. This outer wrapper has the filing endorsement "Capt. Rob Philips, 28 Oct. 1811, 2/-" and is also endorsed inside "Rec. 26 Dec. 1811, Paid the bearer 2/-". An exceptional smuggled P.O.W letter. | 1813 (Aug 9) Entire letter to the Ministry of War in Paris, sent entirely free of charge, with oval "TRANSPORT OFFICE / (crown) / G.R / PRISONERS OF WAR". The letter seeks the release of "citizen Jean Dawson Marshall, businessman, shipwrecked on the coast of St. Valery in an English vessel on 18 February 1807. Being only a passenger, and not a seaman or sailor, he should have been sent back as an exchange, but unfortunately stayed in error - another person was sent back in error. 1814 (Jan 6) Entire letter written by Peter Bussell from the Citadel of Amiens, to Weymouth containing letters to his sister and children. Charged 10d with London (Mar 10) backstamp, and an unusually fine strike of oval "TRANSPORT OFFICE / (crown) / G.R / PRISONERS OF WAR", light overall staining. Peter Bussell was master of the sloop "The Dove" of Weymouth which was captured in 1806 by the French privateer "Les Deux Freres" whilst sailing from Weymouth to London. He was held prisoner for the next 8 years, later publishing an account of his imprisonment. An interesting letter, written upon arrival at Amiens after a 300 mile march from Besancon. Addressed to the Paymaster General of His Majestys Forces in Whitehall, headed "From an Chelsea Pensioner", endorsed "Fco Helvoetsluis" with "KITZINGEN / 7 DEC 1832" and "FRANCO" handstamps, rated 5 1/4Sgr and 22/14kr. The 1844 scandal resulting from the revelation that mail was being opened and read on behalf of the Government in a 'secret office' resulting in special envelopes, wafer seals and patent seals being produced, and many caricatures of the character "Paul Pry", mainly in "Punch". | Anti-Vaccination. 1879 Printed anti-vaccination envelope depicting a mother and baby, the mother's arm being held by a policeman who also holds a sheet of paper reading "VACCINATION ACT FOR JENNER-ATION OF DISEASE" whilst a skeleton inoculates the baby, the reverse with eight printed lines against vaccination, the printed design well painted in watercolour. Posted from Ross to Broughty Ferry franked by a 1d red, backstamped at Dundee and Broughty Ferry. A little minor edge wear and small piece missing from the flap not affecting the printed wording. Very fine and scarce, only about a dozen examples recorded very few of which are hand coloured. We only know of one other example with the printed text on reverse, which was sent from Ross by the same writer as this cover (see Argyll Etkin auction of 20th May 2011, lot 70, sold for £4,000). | Unused envelope with printed square for a stamp at upper right with "STAMPERS READ THE POSTMAN" printed around this, the other three corners with boxed adverts "THE POSTMAN / TWO PENCE / 147 Fleet Street", "SORTERS READ THE POSTMAN" and "LETTER CARRIERS READ THE POSTMAN", headed "Good pay and better work". Also an unused envelope headed "QUEENS HEAD INN GOOD POSTING" with a square for the stamp representing an inn sign with three smoking soldiers below, entitled "Victoria Rifles", with imprints of "Metropolitan Cigar Stores, 95 Queens Road" and "Allen and Morton, 29 Hereford Rd".
