Worcester. 1839 (Dec 11) Entire letter written from Worcester to Tewkesbury with an underinked but clear example of the very scarce handstruck "4" of Worcester. Part of upper flap torn away resulting in the loss of virtually the whole Worcester backstamp. One of just four examples recorded by Chadwick. Photo on Page 54. £180-240

The following 49 lots represent a fine collection of 1810-65 Valentines all postally used within Britain. Most are lettersheet types dating from before 1850, and include several 'cobweb' type valentines with cut central designs that lift to reveal verses or pictures underneath, and two very scarce valentines bearing 1d blacks.

1810 (Feb 14) Valentine lettersheet depicting a quiver of feathers and roses within a ring, superbly handpainted, handwritten verses above and below, posted from London to "The Revd A.E Anshan, Trinity Hall, Cambridge". Very fine, an early and attractive valentine. Photo on Page 54. £200-240

1811 (Feb 13) Valentine lettersheet depicting cupid shooting an arrow into a kneeling lady's heart with a man looking on, well handpainted with hearts above and sequins sown around the picture, handwritten verses inside.
