1830 Entire letter from Madras to the "Secretary, East House, London" headed "Official", with "KEDGEREE / POST OFFICE / SHIP LETTER", Calcutta G.P.O c.d.s in red and boxed ship letter datestamp, and the very scarce crowned boxed "FREE / 20 SE 20 / 1830" datestamp (Jay type 846) applied upon arrival in the London Ship Letter Office. The free franking privilege rarely extended to mail to or from abroad and this Free datestamp was therefore rarely used; it is extremely unusual on a letter from India. Photo on Page 114. £350-400

1836 Entire letter from Bombay Harbour to England headed "Seamans letter" and countersigned "Thos Clendon, Lieutt Commdg H.C.S Hastings", allowed at the concession rate of 3d (1d sailors rate + 2d ship letter gratuity) with fine "INDIA SOLDIERS / 3 / LONDON" (Jay 1302a). Closed tear at base of address panel and minor staining, otherwise fine and rare. Although many soldiers letters are found from India concessionary rate letters from sailors are very scarce. 1837 Entire letter from Nagpore to Scotland "Per Steamer from Bombay if in time - post paid" and inscribed "to be forwarded by sailing ship if too late for the steamer", the reverse endorsed by the Nagpore Residency Post Office certifying that inland postage to Bombay and sea postage were paid in full, with red "NAGPORE / POST / PAID". Received at Falmouth by Mediterranean Packet backstamped with light green "MALTA / F" and boxed " 1/2", most unusual on a letter from India. £180-200

1839-49 Correspondence from Thomas Abbott to his fiancée and later wife Charlotte in Highgate, London, the first six letters written in England (1839-42), the remaining five letters sent from India after Abbot had joined the army, these all headed "From Gnr Thomas Abbott, 4/1 Arty, no 1200" and countersigned by an Officer, charged the 2d unpaid soldiers concession rate. The first two letters written from Kurrachee (Oct/Dec 1845), the others from Sholapoor (Aug 1848, April/July 1849). Four of these soldiers letters contain remarkable watercolour illustrations by Abbott showing people known in England or India, fellow soldiers, guns and gun carriages, sailing into Bombay, Thomas and Charlotte together, etc, also a further seven watercolours which were sent within other letters including self portraits of Abbott (4, two in army uniform, one of these in front of a cannon), Charlotte and birds (2). An exceptional lot, the watercolours well done, the first such illustrated lettersheets from soldiers in India we have seen. Also a few related letters and papers. Two of the illustrated letters have some tape stains, otherwise all very fine (18+). Photo on Page 112. £4,000-5,000

1841 Entire letter to London, written by a pensioner formerly in the East India Company forces claiming prize money for the capture of the American schooner "Mary" of Boston off La Guayra in 1814. The address panel headed "From Bernard McCann, Hon. Compys Pensioner, Vellore" and countersigned by the Fort Adjutant in charge of Pensioners, Vellore, allowed at the soldiers concession rate with circular "SOLDIERS & SEAMANS LETTER / 4 / BY SHIP" (Rob In7a, a little overinked). Backstamped red oval "VELLORE / FREE", Madras G.P.O and Out Station Ship Letter, and at London. Part upper flap missing, otherwise fine and a good example of the scarce 4d charge (2d unpaid soldiers rate + 2d ship letter gratuity). Photo on Page 114. £600-700
