WRECK COVERS

1862 (Sep 27) Water damaged letter from Melbourne together with the front of the cover which originally enclosed this letter, addressed to Neath, the front with boxed "Saved from the wreck of / the Colombo" in black and a red Registered London (Dec 31) datestamp, water damaged with parts missing from the edges. Also the Post Office ambulance envelope used to send the front and letter on to Neath, with similar red Registered London (Dec 31) datestamp and another strike of the "Colombo" wreck cachet in red, some spotting and torn upon opening. The "Colombo" was wrecked on Minicoy Island in the Indian Ocean on November 19th, this cover being amongst the first mails to be recovered. An interesting group, the "Colombo" wreck cachet very scarce in red. (3). Photo on Page 89. £350-400

1907 (July 15) Picture postcard from Toronto to England, a little water stained with the stamp washed off, handstamped by black boxed "IS" to indicate that the card was fully prepaid, with violet boxed "DAMAGED BY IMMERSION / IN SEA WATER. - I.S". Mails posted in Toronto on this date were carried by the "Kronprinz Wilhelm", arriving in London on July 23rd. The mail was probably damaged by a mailbag falling into the dock during unloading. £70-80

1930 Cover from South Yarra, Victoria, to Scotland with the stamp washed off, handstamped violet "Damaged by Water / on S.S. Comorin". A fire was discovered in the hold of the "Comorin" after leaving Colombo on March 12th, and was extinguished by flooding the hold with seawater. A very scarce cachet, apparently unlisted by Hoggarth and Gwynn. Photo on Page 89. £200-240
