Click to view full image... 1865 "Lady's Circular" envelope bearing Edinburgh & Leith Parcel Delivery Co. 1865 rouletted ¼d yellowish-green (CD15, fault at left) cancelled "RB&Co" monogram, the envelope endorsed by the recipient "Delivered at my house 2 Windsor Street on the 13th December 1865 closed & fastened. G. Young, 4 Decemr 1865". A rare use of the Circular Delivery Co. stamp on cover, especially with the monogram cancel. The recipients inscription suggests this was almost certainly one of the envelopes collected by the Post Office and used as evidence in their case against the Circular Delivery Companies, who were found guilty of operating an illegal postal service. Elizabethan Letter. 1590 (Dec 27) Entire letter headed "By the Queene" and signed by Thomas Berry requesting the loan for one year of twenty pounds to help pay for the defence of the realm, the money to be paid to the collector for the Manor of Richmond appointed by the Privy Council. A footnote has been added on January 23rd by Alderman George Bond to say he has received twenty pounds from Thomas Wheler, with a further note signed by Thomas Wheler at Baynardscastle Warde, London (June 21 1592) to say the money has been prepaid to him. Addressed "To our trusty and well beloved Thomas Wheler, London", a few small insect holes, otherwise fine and a rare Elizabethan letter sent just two years after the Armada. Sir George Bond had been Lord Mayor of London in 1587. Photo on Page 12. £2,000-2,400

  Joseph Ady. 1828-46 Entire letters from the notorious fraudster Joseph Ady, the first handwritten, the other two printed, also a letter from James Ames (possibly a pseudonym for Ady) requesting a pension payment. Ady's activities led to a change in the law, making it an offence to refuse to pay postage due charges on unpaid mail that was undelivered and returned to the sender. (4). £120-150

  Freeling Correspondence. 1819-34 Letters to Francis Freeling, the Post Office Secretary, including 1834 letter from the Home Secretary requesting the franking privilege for Edward John Stanley who had been appointed one of his secretaries; another 1834 letter from the Earl of Haddington, newly appointed as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, asking if he can frank letters anywhere in Great Britain and whether the franking privilege extends to his secretary (with a copy of Freeling's reply); a request to appoint Miss Jane Grylls Postmistress of Redruth instead of her mother, etc. (5). £100-120

Canal Posts. 1846-47 Entire letters to William Moseley or Thomas Pointon at Middlewich all carried by boat on the Trent and Mersey Canal, contents concerning the workings of the canal, many sent with goods. Several have the address panels endorsed "Boat", some from or carried by the carriers "Sutton & Co." or "Pickford & Co.". A scarce and fascinating lot on album pages with the 1989 Lancashire & Yorkshire Postal History Society publication "The Middlewich Letters.   1911-61 Internal flight covers and cards including 1911 First UK Aerial Post postcards (2, one from Windsor) and London emergency printing envelope, 1935-36 "BY AIR MAIL" cachets of Glasgow (8) including examples of the rare handstamp with the blank centre symbol intended for use on registered mail only (2, one incorrectly used on an ordinary letter) and the very rare machine mark incorporating the Glasgow datestamp, etc. (21). £200-240

Also a 1923 card franked 3½d to Poland handstamped "NO FLIGHT / SENT BY / ORDINARY SERVICE".
