  1930 (Aug 24-Sep 3) Jacobabad to Reti emergency R.A.F air service due to flooding, covers flown from Jacobabad to Reti (5), covers and a card flown from Reti to Jacobabad (10), five of these bearing red or white "Reti To Jacobabad 1930" flight vignettes, all 15 items handstamped violet "EMERGENCY AIR MAIL".   1930 (Sep 30) R-101 Proposed flight from London to India. Ephemera comprising a letter from the Superintendent of Police at Karachi enclosing passes for one car and two people to the Royal Airship Base to see the arrival of the R.101, together with the three specially printed passes, each of which bears the cachet of the "Aircraft Depot, R.A.F, Drigh Rd, Karachi, Adjutants Office", and strangely have adverts for Ardath cork tipped cigarettes on the reverse. Also two photographic postcards of the wrecked airship and coffins of victims in France. A rare group, the R-101 crashed in France so never reached Karachi. (6). £600-650

All three flights bear differing "American Flyers" cachets, the flights from Calcutta also handstamped "Held up till 1st April / owing to unforeseen circumstances". Click to view full image...Click to view full image... 1931-33 Covers intended for air mail within the USA, the 1931 (Sep. 17) cover from Ganhati to Denver inscribed "Air Mail Karachi to Croydon and New York City to Denver, Colo." franked 9a with a 5c U.S Air mail stamp cancelled in both India and Denver. The 1933 (Oct. 7) cover from Bombay to Palo Alto franked 1a9p with an 8c U.S Air mail stamp applied but ringed as invalid, marked as 25c due, converted to 13 cents in the USA. Handstamped "T" and boxed "INSUFFICIENTLY PAID FOR / TRANSMISSION BY AIR MAIL" with 13c in U.S dues on the reverse, inscribed "Via Air Mail to Europe, Via Air Mail New York to California", correctly sent by surface to England as the India air postage was underpaid, the U.S air mail stamp for internal U.S air mail misunderstood in India and the cover incorrectly sent by surface within the USA. U.S Air mail stamps for air mail within the USA were available from consular offices in many overseas countries; their use from India is rare. An exceptional pair showing the correct acceptance and incorrect disallowing of the U.S air mail stamps in India, on covers to the USA. (2). Photo on Page 172. £300-400

Everest Expedition flag logo both tied by the circular cachet "MOUNT EVEREST EXPEDTN / 1933 / PAR AVION - BY AIR - CORREO AEREO", signed by Fellowes on the day of his first survey flight. The page also signed by Stephen Smith, globetrotter Frank L. Cook and four officials at Purnea, handstamped boxed "PURNEA JUNCTION". Bearing the flight vignette depicting an elephant, tied by the cachet "TRANSPORTE A HANOI / RENVOYE A CALCUTTA PAR L'AIR-ORIENT / POUR ETRE MIS A LA POSTE".   1933-38 Tata Airways first flight covers comprising 1933 (May 27-30) first flights from Poona to Bellary, Karachi (2, one a postcard flown to England by Imperial Airways) or Madras; 1935 demonstration flights from Bombay to Calcutta (Feb 25), Calcutta to Bombay (Feb 26) or Bombay to Trivandrum (Oct 29); 1937 (Apr. 16) first flights from Bhuj to Karachi, Hyderabad, Bombay, Madras or Ahmedabad, or from Karachi or Bombay to Bhuj; 1937 first flights from Delhi to Bombay (Nov 8) or Bombay to Delhi (Nov.10, two covers); and 1938 (Feb. 28) Trichinopoly to Madras first flight. In May 1933 the Karachi-Madras service altered its stopping place en route temporarily from Bombay to Poona as the result of flooding at Juhu aerodrome, very few first flight covers being sent from the new stop at Poona. In 1937 Tata extended their Madras-Karachi service to a new fair season halt at Bhuj; only two days notice of the change was given and very few first flight covers were therefore sent. First Outward flight covers flown from Karachi to Calcutta (2), Delhi to Asansol, Allahabad to Asansol or Jodhpur to Asansol, and first return flight covers flown from Allahabad to Cawnpore, Asansol to Allahabad or Asansol to Cawnpore, and a postcard to Sharjah flown from Calcutta to Karachi and then by Imperial Airways to Bahrain with datestamps of Bahrain (July 13) and Dubai (July 25). Most with some toning, the card also with three repaired corners, nevertheless very rare with just three items flown on the Calcutta-Karachi flight and then on to Bahrain. (9).   Cygnus Crash. 1937 (Dec 1) Covers from India to Great Britain, one from Bombay franked 7a6p, the other two with their stamps washed off, one of these registered from Delhi, all recovered from the Imperial Airways flying boat "Cygnus" which overturned and sank with the loss of two lives when taking off from Brindisi on December 5th. "Malabar-Princess" Crash. 1950 (Nov 1) Cover from Bombay to London franked 12a, the reverse bearing the explanatory label "Salvaged April 1951, from the / Air Liner "Malabar-Princess", which / crashed in the Alps, November, 1950", tied by a London F.S c.d.s of 30 April 1951. The Air India flight from Cairo to Geneva crashed into Mont Blanc on November 3rd 1950 killing all 48 passengers and crew. Mail was recovered at various times over the next 27 years, this cover being from the second mail bag to be found, in April 1951. Central vertical fold, otherwise fine and scarce.   1927-29 Covers from Iraq (16) or Persia to England carried on the Imperial Airways Basra - Baghdad - Cairo service (14) or the Basra - London Service (3, one carried on the first flight of 8th August 1929), a front diverted to surface mail, and 1924 (Oct 16) registered cover from Damascus to Cairo bearing Syria 2pi - 10pi set of four overprinted "Avion". Also 1919-20 registered covers bearing Iraq British Occupation 1a pair from F.P.O 85 or 102, and a stampless 1917 cover from F.P.O 55. (22). £200-250
