  Invalid Stamps. 1867 Cover from Liverpool bearing a previously used 1d red, endorsed "Old Stamp" with a 2d charge mark, a few small edge tears; 1893 cover bearing a 1d lilac with "Capt. Reyton Worlds Water Show" overprint for use as a receipt stamp, handstamped "contrary to regulations / E.C" and "2d"; 1904 postcard posted in Edinburgh, much of the ½d stamp torn away, endorsed "mutilated stamp" and handstamped "Contrary to Regulations" and "1"; and 1873 cover bearing a 1d postal stationery cut-out tied by Edinburgh 131 duplex, handstamped "Contrary to Regulations" and a "2" charge mark. Invalid stamps. 1906 Cover from London to passenger on the S.S "Magdalena" at Lisbon franked by a QV 2½d postal stationery cut-out and a 1d revenue stamp embossed on white paper, the 2½d stamp cancelled by a London E.C c.d.s, the embossed revenue disallowed and therefore uncancelled, both stamps then tied by a "T / C.68" handstamp applied on the London & Dover T.P.O. The reverse bears a 100r due cancelled in Lisbon. Opened out to display the reverse, otherwise mainly fine and very unusual. Photo on Page 43. £200-250

  Registration. 1890 Cover from New York to London compulsory registered with a Caution label on the reverse and an 8d charge mark; 1901 cover with boxed "NO ADDRESS" and "6d", a Caution label on reverse; 1903 cover franked 1d, endorsed "Registered for better security of contents" and "Contains unsigned 10/- postal order" with a "4d" charge mark crossed out and replaced by "2d", red Inland Branch G.P.O wax seals and boxed "Found open and / resealed in I.B"; 1894 Posted Out of Course cover with circular framed "S.W / 6d" charge mark; and other 1924-59 Posted Out of Course covers.   Compulsory Registration. 1861 Cover from Glasgow to Edinburgh marked "Registered" by the sender but only franked by a 2d blue, endorsed "Posted in common letter box" and handstamped red boxed "REGISTERED / AT / GLASGOW". Marked "Fine 6d", crossed out and increased to 1/-. A large closed tear at left, still a very presentable example of this very scarce 1/- charge. The 1/- fine for letters found to be marked Registered was introduced in November 1856, and was reduced to 8d at the beginning of 1863. £100-120

  Compulsory Registration. 1901 Returned Letter Office envelope with a printed 2d charge, the reverse with a printed explanation that it contains valuables and has been registered; 1912-19 covers compulsory registered with Caution labels applied, charged 4d (2) or 6d; and single Caution labels showing charges of 8d, 4d or 4d / 2d (2), an interesting lot.   Postage Stamps used as dues. 1927 Covers from France to Walkerburn, Peebleshire, franked 1f50 both with 3d charge marks of the London Inland Section, the first with the charge collected by a 3d postage stamp (Nov. 9), the second with a 2d and two ½d postage due stamps (Nov. 17). A very unusual use of a postage stamp in lieu of a due, the office presumably having run out of dues on Nov. 9th, a new supply having been delivered by the following week. (2). £120-150

  Postage stamps used as dues. 1969-75 Covers and cards all with Machin issue postage stamps used to collect postage due charges, comprising 1969 unpaid cover with 4d pair tied by Stoke on Trent c.d.s (June 16); 1975 cover with initial 2p charge not collected at Peterborough, a 2p postage stamp applied to collect the second charge (May 8); and 1975 postcard with initial 6p charge not collected at Leicester, a second charge then collected using 5p postage due and 1p postage stamp (Mar. 20). Bisected Postage Due. 1921 1d Postcard from Hampstead, a 1d charge mark applied, collected with a diagonally bisected 2d postage due stamp tied by West Kensington c.d.s (Dec. 29). A few very minor stains, otherwise fine and rare, believed to be the only recorded 2d bisect at West Kensington on this day, although another 2d bisected is recorded on 2nd January 1922, and this office also bisected 2d dues on one occasion in June 1921.   G.B Dues Used in Ireland. 1923 (March) Covers, one sent unpaid from Cork to Dublin charged 4d with G.B. ½d postage due block of eight tied by Dublin datestamps; the other from Monaghan to Lisburn bearing Irish overprint 1½d and G.B ½d stamps, the G.B stamp disallowed and a 1d charge mark applied, the G.B ½d then cancelled upon arrival at Lisburn and the charge reduced to ½d with a ½d postage due applied.   1839 (Oct 29) Three page printed pamphlet "The Plan For A Uniform Penny Postage Considered", the text being a copy of a letter from John Gladstone (MP, father of William Ewart Gladstone) written to the Chancellor of the Exchequer. A rare pamphlet, printed by Wm. Bennett of Montrose. The first example we have seen of this pamphlet; we can trace just one other example, in the National Library of Scotland. £200-250

Click to view full image... 1841 Edinburgh G.P.O Post Office Notices sent out by E.S Lees, April 1841 notice enclosing a specimen of the new 2d envelope, the sale of which was then confined to the London 2d Post area, with an attached 2d envelope handstamped red "Specimen", and the right portion only of the notice to all Postmasters enclosing specimens of the new 1d and 2d postage labels and envelopes and announcing the intention to alter the obliterating ink from red to black (the left half, which bore the labels and envelopes, removed and missing).   1890 Penny Post Jubilee. 1d envelopes unused and C.T.O at the South Kensington Museum, the Furniss and Elliott caricatures with insert cards, and a very unusual miscut Furniss caricature insert card with the printing diagonally across the card and partly missing as a result. Also the Post Office Christmas card which illustrates the Penny Postage envelope, postcard and handstamps. (10). £120-150

  Official Envelopes. c.1900-01 QV 1d Pink envelopes unused, on white paper with "On Her Majestys Service" heading to "The Supervisor" or "The Officer" or on buff paper with O.H.M.S heading to "The ........" or "The Collector", all fine (EO25/6, 32/3); and mourning envelope (123x250mm) with "On His Majestys Service" heading and "Board of Agriculture (Animals Division)" in the upper right corner, heavy vertical fold and a little creasing but very rare, only one other example believed to have been recorded (EO24). Also three 1847 G.P.O "Remittance Letter of Acknowledgement" with W.L Maberley imprint all used from London to the Postmaster of Canterbury with red Paid datestamps. (8). £200-250

Click to view full image... 1897 Piece of paper (138x197mm) with embossed ½d - 1/- S.T.O dies and an embossed 1d revenue die, the ½d, 1d, 6d and 10d brown dies undated, the 1½d, 2d, 2½d, 3d, 4d and 1/- dies with nine dot florets, the 1d revenue stamp dated "25 5 97". The ½d die torn, small fault to the 1d die and light stain to the 3d die, otherwise fine and a remarkable sheet.
