  1916 Registered cover to Keetmanshoop bearing four South Africa 3d stamps each tied by Gibeon c.d.s, with unusual triangular framed "Gibeon" handstamp containing the registration number in manuscript; and a 1918 stampless censored registered cover to Windhoek with an unusual embossed "GIBEON" label used as a registration label. The 1918 cover badly torn, the 1916 cover fine, an unusual pair. (2). £80-100

  1896 Stampless cover to London from the Gore Ansley correspondence, endorsed "Active Service, no stamp" with a poor Wadi Halfa c.d.s (July 8), boxed "T" and a 2½d charge mark of the London Foreign Branch. Two letters are enclosed, written from Firket (June 22) or The Desert (July 4), and tell of building the railway, the prisoners taken at Firket and the Beggaras horsemen killed. £180-240

Click to view full image... 1897 Cover to Cairo bearing 1897 2m and 3m pairs on the front and singles on the reverse cancelled by four strikes of the scarce large "MERAWI" star and crescent datestamps (all with the year shown as "96" in error), a further strike on the front, boxed "EGYPTE / R" registration handstamp, backstamped at Halfa and Cairo. Opening faults at upper edge and small part flap missing, a scarce cancel. Photo on Page 201. £350-400

  1930 Cover to the USA bearing Swiss 30c cancelled at Montreaux and a USA 5c Air stamp cancelled at Basel on the following day, the US stamp applied in Switzerland to pay for internal air mail within the USA. US Air Mail stamps were available for this purpose at many overseas consular offices; their use from Switzerland is very unusual. £100-120
