  1922-50 Mainly KGV slogans, the fine collection in a F.G Warwick Major album, many offices, types and differing slogans, single and continuous dies, red Paid or Official Paid machines, triangular dies, etc., including Post Early in the Day with scarce 1937 re-use at Leith (cover + piece), Post Early For Christmas, Join the Kings Roll, Exhibition Newcastle on Tyne and the various Telephone slogans with 1936-40 reuses of "Every Home Needs a Phone" (cover + 3 pieces), etc. A fine lot on covers and cards (48) or pieces (461). Ramsay Macdonald at 10 Downing St., with KGV 1½d tied by the slogan "OPENING OF MOUNT / PLEASANT SORTING / OFFICE BY T.R.H THE / DUKE & DUCHESS OF YORK" with square date die inscribed "½d Paid", containing the original insert showing the sorting office with the printed explanation "this card was passed through the postage stamp cancelling machine by Her Royal Highness the Duchess of York .....", also a photo of the royal couple putting a letter through the machine. Only about 400 items were sent with this slogan, all to V.I.Ps; a very small number of these had the square Paid die included in error, this item being the first such example we have seen. Hull. 1847 Entire letter from Leeds to Hull prepaid 2d in cash, a Leeds datestamp on the front, backstamped upon arrival with blue-green "HULL / SHIP LETTER / A 10 JY 1847" deleted by a cloth covered "383" numeral and replaced by a Hull c.d.s. An exceptional use of a Ship Letter datestamp applied in error to an inland letter, similar to the London Packet Letter error in the following lot. Photo on Page 31. £300-350

P4) applied in error and obliterated by the London numeral "5" in diamond and horizontal oval of bars, datestamps of Lynn and London. An extraordinary error, the only Packet Letter applied in error to an inland letter we have recorded, although a couple of similar Ship Letter errors are known (see lot above). Headed from Private Propert and countersigned, sent from Gosport to Deal prepaid at the 1d soldiers rate. £80-100

  1854 Cover from Paris franked 20c (four margins) to Lieut J.G Harkness, 55th Regiment, Armee Anglaise, Turkey" with arrival backstamps "ARMEE D'ORIENT / BAU C" and "ARMEE D'ORIENT / QUART GAL", the cover turned and reposted back to England charged 3d, backstamped "POST OFFICE / BRITISH ARMY" c.d.s, very unusual. £250-300

  1854 (June 2) - 1855 (Jan 1) Entire letters from Veterinary Surgeon Mathew John Harpley of the Royal Horse Artillery, the first two from Malta or written at sea detailing the voyage from England, others from Camp Ghurickler, Balaclava Camp or Camp before Sebastopol (5) include news of cholera and sickness, the capture of Russian spies, skirmishes with the enemy in which prisoners and supplies were captured, the Battle of Balaclava, the loss of ships in a hurricane, the appalling waste of provisions, the escape of a British Officer captured by the Russians, the appalling postal arrangements, attacks by the Russians, Christmas dinner, the appalling state of Eupatoria, the distribution of French medals, etc. Two letters bear three 1d reds tied by Crown between Star cancels, two others have stamps cancelled in London (one with a stamp removed), the other five are without envelopes or addresses. An interesting correspondence, all with typed transcriptions. (9 letters). £1,800-2,200

  1855 Cover to England bearing a 1d red strip of three (the right stamp with faults) each cancelled by a superb "OXO" obliterator, charged 1d upon redirection from Liskeard to Torpoint, a little edge staining. The enclosed letter written on the Alma Steam Ship off Stamboul. £140-160
