C.H Blunt, Royal Artillery, British Expeditionary Force, Cape Coast Castle, West Africa" endorsed "Mansu", backstamped at Bagshot, London and Cape Coast. The cover has a royal crest and is initialled (AH?), possibly from a member of the royal family at Sandhurst. An unusual ingoing campaign cover. £150-200

A small hole to the address panel and edge staining, explained by the cachet "Saved from the wreck / of the Ava" on the reverse. The P.&O. "Ava" struck rocks and sank on February 10th, eighty miles off Trincomalee; the mail was subsequently recovered by divers. Photo on Page 145. £250-300

Click to view full image... 1869 (Sep 2) Cover from Edinburgh to India, water damaged with the stamps washed off, the reverse bearing the explanatory label "Recovered from wreck of the 'Carnatic'", tied by arrival datestamps of Bombay (Nov 13), Travelling Post Office N.W.P and Umballa. The P.&O. "Carnatic" was wrecked off Shadwan Island on September 13th with the loss of 30 lives; some mailbags were recovered by divers on October 24th. Photo on Page 145. £400-500

  1907 (Sep 7) Stampless Daily Graphic balloon postcard addressed to Bombay, flown in the "Mammoth" balloon from London to Sweden and thrown overboard at Tosse, where the card was posted. Handstamped with a "TOSSE" c.d.s and boxed "T", boxed "POSTAGE DUE / ONE ANNA" (the 1A crossed out in blue crayon) and circular "OVERLAND POSTAGE / DUE /A / 2". The message reads "You won't mind paying surcharge on this card I hope. I don't know from what country it will be despatched. Somewhere between London & Russia." Virtually all the cards from this flight were addressed to Britain, and we have only recorded one other example to India. An exceptional destination. £1,800-2,000

Aero Club, Piccadilly, London" bearing KEVII 3p (2) and ½a each tied by the special pictorial Aerial Post cancel in magenta, backstamped at Allahabad (Feb. 19), Bombay and London (Mar. 10). Enclosed is a printed card "London Address: 30, Evelyn Gardens, S.W. I have the honour to ask you if you will kindly accept this letter-card as a souvenir of the first official aerial post which was despatched from the U.P Exhibition, Allahabad, officially sanctioned, and carried by an aeroplane under Government Post Office Regulations on 20th February 1911", signed W. Windham. A few light stain spots, otherwise fine and very scarce. We have only recorded two other examples of these printed and signed cards from the organiser of the aerial post, Walter Windham; one sold in the 11th November 2011 Argyll Etkin auction (lot 1050) for £3,100 + premium.
