1936 King Edward VIII Issue, an interesting collection in an album mainly relating to the essays for the KEVIII set, containing Williams Brothers stamp size essays comprising 1d in red (with red surround), 4d in black or grey and 10d in blue (2, one on blue card); further stamp size and enlarged (54 x 64mm) 10d blue essays mounted on card signed by M. Williams and dated "7/3/1936"; also a bromide essay of a proposed 3d stamp by H.J. Brown (who designed the four issued stamps) mounted on card and signed by Brown, together with copies of relevant letters sent to or from the Post Office and other essays. Also some related stamps and covers including postmarks used on KEVIII tour as Prince of Wales to India in 1922 (2 covers + block) or South Africa in 1925, and 1936 covers bearing the KEVIII 1d used prior to its issue date, at Glasgow (Sep 7) or Folkestone (Sep 11). The Williams essays were submitted to the Post Office but returned once these designs were rejected; the Brown 3d bromide essay was retained by the designer when he submitted the same stamp sized essay together with his other essays which were chosen for the issued stamps. A rare underprint on this value, only listed by S.G reading downwards (£525 as a single stamp) and unlisted reading upwards, almost certainly unique on an entire. Samuel Montagu. 1868 (Feb 21) Entire to Genoa bearing 2d blue plate 9 and 1867 1/- plate 4 both with "SAMUEL, / MONTAGU / & Co." underprints (1 1/2mm letters) tied by London numerals, London and Genova backstamps. Both stamps lifted to show the underprints and hinged into place, both stamps very scarce (S.G. £1,325 as single stamps), possibly unique on an entire. Also an 1870 (May 24) entire from Samuel Montagu to Norway with 3d and 6d stamps perfined "SM / &Co", the company having apparently ceased to use underprints by this date. (2).
