Includes white (6), buff (13) and blue (2) envelopes, one used for a compulsory registered letter charged 4d, one with part underpaid newspaper wrapper enclosed, six with handstruck charge marks including boxed "2d" of Bristol. 1891-92 Returned Letter Office, G.P.O London printed letters, concerning detained items posted as samples but deemed to be parcels and therefore underpaid. One stampless with a red London Official Paid c.d.s., addressed to the sender of a parcel of "Black Powder, escaping" which was returned as underpaid from Berlin; the other franked 2 1/2d to the addressee in Berlin of a parcel of "Grease". The letters request the deficient postage, the detained items being destroyed if this is not received within a specified time. The first with a little splitting at the folds, otherwise fine. Unusual and scarce. (2). £160-200

A very unusual use of the R.L.S envelope as an ambulance envelope. £80-100
