1906 (Apr 23) Picture postcard to New Zealand with Cape 1d tied "44 ADDERLEY STREET, CAPE TOWN" double ring c.d.s. This Branch Office was only open for seven months; this was the only example of the c.d.s recorded by Putzel and is illustrated in his book. Very scarce. £150-160

The enclosed letter, written from Newcastle, includes "We move into the Transvaal tomorrow. Two companies of ours are in possession of Wakkerstroom and are doing very well; the Boers have made several attacks on them but have failed every time". 1888 Cover to Pietermaritzburg bearing Natal 1d tied by Dundee (June 9) c.d.s in combination with New Republic undated 2d on blue granite paper (S.G. 73) tied by violet oval "VRYHEID / 6 JUN 86" datestamp, backstamped at Helpmakaar and Pietermaritzburg. Some light overall staining, 15mm tear at base and small portion of reverse torn away, the New Republic stamp with a stained corner, still a very presentable and scarce combination cover. Meyers & Co. of Pretoria and their handwritten guarantee that the envelope is genuine, dated 10th Nov. 1898. £80-100

Orange Free State

1852 and 1856 Entire letters sent within Bloemfontein, the first endorsed "Immediate, Per Claus van Wyke", and 1865 entire letter from Potchefstroom to Bloemfontein, all hand delivered without postal markings. Also 1857 despatch note for one official letter from Winburg to Harrismith signed by both Postmasters. (4). £200-250

1878 (Oct 29) Cover from Pretoria to England bearing Transvaal imperf 1877 6d blue with VR overprint (S.G 120) tied by concentric circles cancel, in combination with Cape 1872 1d (2) and 4d with inverted "G" overprint for use in Griqualand (S.G. 21a) tied by Cape Town datestamps (Nov 3). With Pretoria c.d.s and a further Cape Town datestamp on the front, backstamped upon arrival at Bath (Dec 5). Flap missing and light vertical and horizontal folds, not affecting any stamps, otherwise fine and an exceptional triple combination cover. Previously given a 1962 B.P.A Certificate 45299 (the certificate no longer present). Photo on page 136. £1,000-1,200

1892 Cover to Pretoria franked 2d tied by violet fancy "1 NOV 92 / DE JAGERSDRIFT / DIST. UTRECHT" datestamp (possibly a customs cancellation), further cancelled in transit by Vrede squared circle datestamp (Nov. 2). The only recorded cancellation from De Jagersdrift Post Office, which opened in September 1892; this cover featured in an article in the "Forerunners" journal in 2009.
