Mailboat Cancels. 1862 Cover to Dover franked by 1d red strip of six (defect to left two stamps) cancelled by five strike of the very scarce "A92" numeral used on the Cunard Steamer "Asia", London arrival c.d.s (Aug 18) on the front, charged 2d for redirection to Deal, backstamped at Tunbridge Wells, Walmer, Dover and Deal. The "Asia" left Halifax on August 7th arriving at Queenstown on August 16th, mails from there reaching London two days later. The Luddington collection had another cover from this correspondence, posted from Bermuda in September. A fine and scarce mailboat cover. Photo on page 39. £1,000-1,200

Acts. 1714-1840 Acts concerning Post Office rates and regulations (19) including Acts dealing with Penny Posts (1794), the opening and return of mails undeliverable due to war with Holland (1795) or Hamburg (1807), concessionary rates for soldiers and seamen (1795), ship letters (1799 and 1814), posts in Ireland (1803), free franking privilege (1837), conveyance of mails by railways (1838), also the important 1839 Act allowing rates to be reduced and charged by weight and the issue of stamps and postal stationery, and the 1840 Act detailing the new rates and regulations. 1920 (July 20) Commercial cover from London to Paris endorsed "aeroplane post" and handstamped "AIRMAIL", franked 1/- (2) and 2 1/2d, with Paris arrival backstamp dated the same day. The 2/- airmail fee only lasted for two months, from 11th May until 21st July 1920, this cover being sent on the penultimate day before the fee reduced to just 2d. Photo on page 39. £180-220

Field), and Nov. 23rd covers carried on the first official flight from Aberdeen to Lerwick (2) or Lerwick to Aberdeen (5), two bearing the vignettes. Also 1937 (Mar 14) cover flown by Northern & Scottish Airways from Glasgow to Campbeltown due to an accident to the Islay mail boat, signed by the pilots.
