936-39 Record Attempt Flights

1936 Cover to London inscribed "Per favour of Flt. Lt. Tommy Rose, DFC" with circular cachet "CAPETOWN MUNICIPAL AIR-PORT / 3/ MAR 1936 / WINGFIELD", posted upon arrival in London on March 9th franked 1 1/2d, signed on the reverse by Rose. Just 16 letters carried on this record breaking flight from Cape Town, completed in just six days and seven hours. Also a souvenir brochure signed by Rose for his record breaking flight from London to the Cape, these signed brochures sold at 2/6 each for the Cape Town Hospital Equipment Fund. (2). 1936 Cover to Mazabuka, Northern Rhodesia, redirected to Lusaka, the stamps washed off, handstamped by red cachet, "SERVICE POSTAL FRANCAIS / correspondance retardee par suite / du naufrage d'un Avion / Reconstitue par le Service Francais, NE PAS TAXER" with French sealing strip on reverse, Mazabuka (Nov 12) and Lusaka datestamps. The "Boadicea" disappeared over the English Channel on Sept. 25th en route to Paris; a mailbag was found a month later on the beach at Cucq, Pas de Calais, most of the mail being addressed to Africa. 1939 (Mar 10) Registered cover from Nkana to Paris, the stamps washed off, the Nkana registration label reapplied, front and reverse both with the cachet "Damaged by Water when the / Imperial Airways Aircraft forced / landed near Juba, Sudan". With datestamps of Nkana, Lusaka and Paris (Mar 25), the reverse endorsed "Avise Instance Paris 28 Journee". The Durban to London sea plane made a forced landing on the River Dangu and sank on March 15th. A fine example of this scarce crash cover. Photo on page 68. £300-350
