1895 USA 2c Postal stationery envelope front from Oregon bearing 2c pair (faults) and Victoria 2d postal stationery envelope uprated 1d, both to Edinburgh with "4" charge mark, being the same handstamp originally used during the 1839-40 Uniform 4d Post period. The cover with Edinburgh backstamp (July 16), also handstamped by boxed "INSUFFICIENTLY / PAID", a very late use of this handstruck "4", fine and scarce. (2). Photo on page 49. £500-600

1839 Ticket printed on green card, 113 x 77m, - "HUSTINGS TICKET, The honour of Mr.......'s Attendance is Requested at A PUBLIC MEETING To be held in the EGYPTIAN HALL OF THE MANSION HOUSE, on Friday next, 31st of May, 1839, at Two o'clock precisely, To Petition Parliament for the adoption of Mr Rowland Hill's Plan of AN UNIFORM PENNY POSTAGE, as recommended by the Select Committee of the House of Commons. The Right Hon. THE LORD MAYOR in the Chair.", together with a printed note transmitting the enclosed ticket. Also a printed letter requesting attendance at a meeting of the "Committee for Promoting the adoption of the Report of the Select Committee of the House of Commons on Postage". A rare trio in superb condition, produced by the Mercantile Committee on Postage as part of their campaign for Penny Postage, from the set of Mercantile papers collected by George Moffatt. (3). Zeppelin Mail - The Hindenburg Disaster of 6th May 1937

1937 Printed schedule of flights for the Hindenburg between Frankfurt and Lakehurst (and also the Graf Zeppelin between Frankfurt and Rio de Janeiro); postcards cancelled on the Hindenburg (1st May 1937) and dropped out over Cologne with Koln 3.5.37 c.d.s and Deutschlandfahrt cachets (2); a photo of the Hindenburg over Boston on May 6th; and a Press photo of the airship alight at Lakehurst. 1937 (May 1) Picture postcard written and signed by Ernst A. Lehmann, addressed by him to Berlin, with Hindenburg 50pf cancelled on the airship and red Deutschlandfahrt cachets, dropped over Cologne on May 3rd. Also a photo of Lehmann on the airship. Very scarce, one of the last items of mail from Lehmann, Captain of the "Hindenburg", who died on May 7th from injuries received in the disaster the previous day. Photo on page 53. £250-300

1937 (May 5) Cover to Ernst Klaus in Chicago bearing 1934 Air 5pf and 1936 Winter Relief fund 5pf + 6pf + 5pf strip, 6pf + 5pf + 6pf strip and 40pf, overfranked 3pf for the 75pf rate to the USA, posted on the airship, the stamps cancelled by two complete "DEUTSCHE LUFTPOST / LUFTSCHIFF / HINDENBURG / - 5. 5. 1937 / EUROPA-NORDAMERIKA" datestamps. Recovered from the airship at Lakehurst after the fire on May 6th, the edges damaged by fire, enclosed within a transparent ambulance envelope, sealed by U.S Post Office labels. A fine Hindenburg crash cover from the mails posted and cancelled on board. Very rare, with Certificates of Genuineness from Hermann Sieger (1958) and Dieter Leder (2002).
