A good lot with an interesting 1783 entire letter from Kingston to the Jamaica Coffee House; 1800 and 1809 entire letters from British Officers in Gibraltar; 1840 entire letter from Tongkoo, Burma; and other entire letters from Grenada, Barbados and Haiti. Portsmouth/Plymouth Dock. 1814-15 Entire letters written by Capt. J. Michell, Royal Artillery, from H.M.S "Royal Oak", the first written from "Chesapeake Bay" (16 Sep 1814) describing the attack on Baltimore at which General Ross was killed; the second written "off the Mississippi" (22 Jan 1815) includes news of the Battle of New Orleans on Jan. 8th, the letters with superb oval double ring "SHIP LETTER / (crown) / PORTSMOUTH" (Rob. S9) or the scarce oval single ring type (S11, only recorded 1815). Also another 1814 (Oct 5) entire letter from Michell written on the "Royal Oak" at "Potomac" with red "PLYM. DOCK / SHIP LETTER" (Rob. S3, torn). A scarce trio with exceptional content (also see lot 159 for another letter from Michell written off America in 1814). (3). Photo on page 33. £300-350

Portsmouth. 1847 Entire with green Montevideo c.d.s carried by the Packet H.M.S "Dolphin" from Buenos Ayres and Montevideo to Rio de Janeiro which continued onto Portsmouth, with "PACKET-LETTER / PORTSMOUTH" (Rob. P1) and Portsmouth backstamp (Feb 21). This was the third and final packet from this branch line service to continue on to Portsmouth, presumably being due for a refit at the Naval Dockyard; see Robertson Revisited page 256 for another letter from this sailing. Queenborough. 1800 Entire to the Carolina Coffee House in London (almost certainly from the USA) with very scarce curved "QUEENBOROUGH / SHIP LRE" (Rob. S2, recorded 1799-1800), most exceptionally also having oval "Ship Letter / (crown)" handstamp with the port name removed. This unusual handstamp was unrecorded by Robertson, but Tabeart has since recorded one other example, also used in January 1800 (listed by him as S7a of London). The rate altered from 7d to 9d by a London inspector's crown, red London backstamp (Jan 15), the reverse showing signs of disinfection. Minor staining and some splitting at folds, a remarkable item. S33), both deleted by black "43" in diamond barred numerals, a black "SOUTHAMPTON / PACKET LETTER" c.d.s (Rob. P3) applied, also handstamped "T" with "340" Reis charge mark. 1860-61 Covers with sideways "H" and "A" code cancellations or backstamps of Dublin, with the rare 186 duplex cancelling 1d reds on Oct. 26 1860 cover to Edinburgh or May 25 1861 piece, and backstamps on covers (6, Nov. 9 1860 - Apr. 26 1861). Very scarce, these postmarks only used 1860-61, the duplex cover one of just three examples recorded by Lovelock and illustrated in his book.
