Edinburgh. 1904-60 Cards and covers with various Paquebot handstamps including G.B omnibus type in black on 1904 postcard from Reykjavik bearing G.B 1/2d (H7, first recorded year of use, unusual on G.B), H277 and H283 (2) on items with G.B stamps, and Iceland frankings with H22 (violet), H279 (2), H277 or H282 with "Post Early" slogan. (9). £160-180
152
Exeter. 1837 Entire from Calcutta "p. Catherine" backstamped by red boxed "INDIA LETTER / EXETER" (Rob. In1), the letters "ETER" a little unclear, otherwise mainly fine and a scarce mark, only recorded used in 1837. £80-100
153
Falmouth. 1810 Entire letter from Gibraltar, the long letter giving a good detailed description of the campaign against the French, the writer E. J. Mitchell having been sent to command a force of Spanish partisans. Disinfected and with a superb oval Ship Letter handstamp in red (Rob. S4, first recorded year of use). A good campaign letter. £100-120
154
Falmouth. 1827 Entire letter from Manila to London backstamped with red "FALMOUTH / SHIP LETTER" (Rob. S6) crossed through in manuscript and replaced by red boxed "INDIA LETTER / FALMOUTH" (Rob. In1), both these handstamps then overstruck by black "SHIP LETTER / FALMOUTH" (Rob. S7, previously only recorded in 1834) with a third strike on the address panel. The address panel with some corner staining from previous mounts, otherwise fine and a most remarkable item. The only letter we have recorded bearing three differing Ship/India Letter handstamps from a single port. Photo on page 25. £600-800
155
Falmouth. 1852 Entire letter to London, written and posted in Falmouth with straight line "ARWENACK ST" handstamp and a Falmouth datestamp, bearing a 1d red cancelled by "290" numeral. Despite this the entire has a "FALMOUTH / SHIP LETTER" handstamp (Rob. S6) clearly applied in error, and most extraordinarily with "FALMOUTH" in blue and "SHIP LETTER" in red; as a result of this handstamp the letter was incorrectly charged 8d as an unpaid Ship Letter. Two vertical file folds, one of which crosses the 1d red, and a small area of paper corrosion caused by the ink used for the "8" charge, nevertheless a remarkable item. An exceptional misuse of a Ship Letter handstamp on an inland letter and the only bicoloured Ship Letter handstamp we have seen. Photo on page 25. £300-400
156
